I guess I'm a contrarian but the new song is awful. Her singing is great as usual, and the visuals are lovely, but the song itself is hot garbage. The rhythm is nonsensical and hard to follow and there's not much else to the song. I feel like this is trying WAY too hard to be "new age" while just sounding like shit. I couldn't listen to it more than once, which is a shame because she's a very good singer.

I'm the kind of person who would be even more motivated to listen to it more times if I got this repulsed the first time. I usually only listen to a song once if it did absolutely nothing to me, and left me completely indifferent. I can certainly see where you're coming from, but I enjoyed it from when I caught the premiere as I was getting ready for work. Most of the music I already listen to is either strange-sounding electronic music or stuff with multiple time signatures in a song so it lit up several pleasant parts of my brain. I definitely agree that Ahoy! shows off more of her vocal range and is overall a more fun song, though.

It's packed full of fun ideas. The slow progression from chaos to relative order. A dozen different techniques for layering and tweaking the vocals. How those layered vocals match the lyrics. The double entendres in the lyrics. The contrast between short, almost choppy vocals and long, drawn-out vocals. Not needing the mix to be full 90% of the fucking time so it actually stands out when the mix IS full. Drawing out the the words at the start of nearly every measure to create a cadence that catches you off guard yet has a sense of structure that's hard to place until you actively analyze it. The break to just listen to a soundscape. The way the beat peters out at the ending like some sort of physical machine was responsible for it and lost power.

I'm sure you could find plenty of songs that have used these individual techniques before, but putting them all together, rapid-fire, and with good execution is notable and turns the song into a sort of game to see where it's going next and how many little touches you can notice. Also, it's not more generic pop.
