Zentreya was a VRChat mute. Mutes were pretty popular because an audience and other players can project a personality on them and fill in blanks on their own. They grew as a streamer with the help of a bunch of other streamers who were on the VRChat hype train in 2018/2019. It was kinda too late for them to voice reveal at that point, if they did they'd lose audience and they were growing exponentially. Now they just keep up the gimmick because they have to. To my knowledge he's never claimed to be female and I think specifically says the character is female, not himself.
