Immersion is honestly key, when I was in Japan for my first year with barely any English to go off of since I wasn't living in one of the big cities, my brain went "oh fuck" mode and starts downloading language data en masse, which is further reinforced by constant daily exposure. I'd even argue that written language might as well be an entirely separate field as actual spoken language is very simple and very intuitive to grasp onto, even with all of its honorifics and social codes.

Then after about 6 months I was pretty damn conversational and I actually stopped studying for the next year and a half I was there. But I could talk to people and do things, it was good enough for me.
