Undertale was released all at once. Deltarune is a thing that gets an update every few years and by the time chapter 7 comes out the kids who played Undertale autistically will be in their 30s and possibly have their own kids and not really enough time to care about it. It's a classic case of an indieish developer trying to really milk it but not being fast enough to capitalize on his audience. Like how sometimes they release a sequel to a popular movie 15 years later purely as a cash grab without realizing that time is of the essence and eventually your fanatics get bored and move onto other things.

And because he took so long to release even just the second part, Undertale has long surpassed Deltarune because Undertale has been a complete story for so much longer. I suppose he thinks of Deltarune as his magnum opus- and if Undertale itself is supposed to be connected to Deltarune then maybe the autism inherent to that will give it an internet work of art feeling- but as things are he thinks the third chapter will be out in 2 years and the second one just dropped and it took him 3 years between one and two and there are 7 chapters total. Do you think people are going to wait until 2031 for a memegame that takes like 6 hours to play through each chapter?

Something like this would honestly benefit in a sense from the kind of quickshot releases that old VN series like Higurashi got- which is another example of how waiting too long kills momentum since Ciconia part 2 is in hiatus hell while R07 milks Higurashi some more.

He's also releasing chapter 3 along with 4 and 5 so that "two year" estimate is for all 3 at once. Who knows how long 6 and 7 will take but I doubt two years. Like I said 2 was stated to be the longest chapter, and he has a team behind him now which took up most of 2's development. I say we'll have the entire game in 3 years at most.
