What is /asp/?

A thread for aspiring vtubers! Whether your goal is to make the journey as an independent streamer or to gain experience and build a portfolio for agency auditions. Let's help each other grow and make it. Indies are welcome to selfpost, but shill responsibly. Share your knowledge, insights, feedback, discuss what has worked and what hasn't worked for you. And always remember to do your research before posting personally identifying information. That includes both in this thread and in your audition applications to agencies.

FAQ:
>Do I need a fully rigged model to be a vtuber?
Nope! You can get started as a simple .png character!

>I want to learn how to rig Live2D models, where do I go?
Brian Tsui (of Iron Vertex), Kira Omori and the official Live2D YouTube channels have many tutorials available.

>Where can I find artists/riggers?
vtuber.gg, ArtStation, DeviantArt, Twitter, Reddit, Skeb.jp, etc.

>I just want to get started, can I buy pre-made models?
Yes! Live2D models can be purchased off nizima.com (Live2D's official marketplace) or booth.pm (general Japanese indie artist website). Be sure to check compatibility with your facial tracking software!

>Where can I learn how to digital market myself?
https://learndigital.withgoogle.com/digitalgarage

>Where can I find some good games to stream?
https://twitchtracker.com/games
https://sullygnome.com/

>Twitch or YouTube?
The general rule of thumb is Twitch if your content is primarily based on livestreaming and YouTube if your content is primarily pre-recorded and edited.

>Do you think there's an audience for X, Y, Z content?
First, ask yourself if you would watch a streamer of your skill and experience. Second, do a check on social media and look to see if other streamers are already creating similar content. Don't limit yourself to vtubers, include traditional real life streamers to scope out a potential audience.

Question to start the thread off:
How do you deal with the psychological fallout of an off day? Say you've usually got several active chatters and double digit viewers, how do you cope with those odd days where nobody seems to show up?

>> No.16017440

>>16017108
It's a very harsh feeling but just don't look at the number and act as if it was any other regular day. Be your own viewer and engage in topics that you can carry by yourself or just practise zatsudans. Eventually someone will tune in, if not, at least you did some reps and had fun.

Try to figure out why. Was it the first time I've played that game? An unusual day, or time? Did I remember to post on discord/twitter to let people know?

If I've done everything I should, then I'll just write it off. Maybe if the figures were really bad I'll go and comfort eat or shitpost in the back, because my coping strategies are terrible.

But I'll make a note of it, and maybe switch the day (Wednesday isn't a great day for viewers, but it's my free day midweek). But if I get bad numbers a few times for a single game, then I'll remove it from rotation.

All constants were pretty much the same, bit of a slow day for in-game content, mobage content ebbs and flows, probably wasn't an awesome choice for the day but I've had better numbers on worse days so I'll chalk that up to luck. Felt like a really solid stream otherwise, wound up being just like that other anon said, chatting practice, specifically for improvisational topic selection, but once I went offline I had that sinking demoralized feeling like I was screaming fruitlessly into the void

Those don't exist. You'd need to pack your walls with heavy insulation to absorb sound to get anywhere near "sound proofing" levels. This is a meme and doesn't actually work. Your best bet would be to raise the gain on your microphone and just talk closer into it.

You will be able to measure your success by the amount of new follows each raid produces. Most of them just want to leave so you have 10 secs to make a pitch: this is where you have to show people why they have to click on the heart.

The one person who excelled at this was Little_S, and there is a reason why he is one of the few males to make it to partner on his own.

other chuubas who do better than i have shared their numbers and aren't able to reliably convert raid viewers to return viewers. they mention a lot of factors that are impossible to address in just 10 seconds.

>do you and the raiding chuuba match audiences?
viewers aren't going to stay if they're looking for a high energy chuuba and land in an art stream
>how long has the raiding chuuba been
some viewers section off time to watch a chuuba and stay or lurk for 5-6 hours. they're not likely to stick around for another stream that may go on several more hours.
>voice and model art
going from a tiddy streamer to a png male is going to be a massive loss in retention. there's nothing you can do about it. some viewers are just there for coomerbrain experience and nothing you can do in 10 seconds will convert them.

and a handful more factors that they've shared but i can't remember right now.

> some viewers section off time to watch a chuuba and stay or lurk for 5-6 hours. they're not likely to stick around for another stream that may go on several more hours.

This is why your only objective should be to make them follow you before they leave. They are tired and they are weak. If you kindly ask them in a polite way to "please subscribe" most will do.

>going from a tiddy streamer to a png male is going to be a massive loss in retention
Women: stop raiding NGMI men, you aren't helping them. Your pity prolongs their misery.

Well planned and coordinated raids let chuubas build a shared audience. This is basically how proto vshojo was formed. This is also the power of Twitch groups which are basically proto corpos.
You will have to ditch the deadweight a.k.a males unless it is a pimp like Krimbo who can actually boost you up. SouthSide might grow into a small power just because of this.

Managerchama, does this mean it's worth changing your schedule and networking with chuubas who general end at a certain time so you can end up as their raid targets? Is that too obvious if I show up during their streams at the beginning and end up lurking to go start my own stream around the time they end?

Chuubas /here/ have a tendency to say "oh I already raided this person so I will try someone new" which is also a way of saying: "fuck you" to the people that do this.
If you want this to happen you will have to make it happen: discuss it with them beforehand and offer raid-for-raid.
Alternatively, this can be done via a non verbal agreement: raid someone a few times and turn your audience into theirs, and then next time you are streaming your audience will ask that streamer to raid you back because they also watch you.

if it helps, Pewdiepie put in succintly in his "how to be a youtuber" videos (2 of them). He said you have to posit the viewer a question, like "I played Apex legends on a private server, and this is what happened!". There is room there for the person reading it to wonder what the "this" was.

What I would like to know is how to make sure the viewer gives a shit about the subject in the first place. Although maybe for that it's enough to pose a question?

>how to make sure the viewer gives a shit about the subject in the first place
this is called knowing your audience
not everyone is the same but demographics can still be narrowed down. if you want a certain type of person to give a shit about you then that makes them your target audience. if you're doing apex legends clickbait, you're getting the apex legends audience casual audience, which will likely include teens to young adults, majority male, etc its a rather specific example and going that deep is for businesses, but it applies here

Oh, so it's kinda like picking a category on twitch: each game has a specific audience, and you can be sure that they will at least glance at your stream by virtue of being in that category. And the rest is up to the thumbnail/title.

>> No.16067944

>>16067766
Kinda? Using that type of audience seeking for a stream is a bit fickle since its mostly dependent on how many people are going to be lurking those categories and then your charisma takes over from there. The example was more for videos since that's where most clickbait is. You can definitely make clickbait stream titles though, but that's harder with less viewers.
"fisting orphans" when referring to fighting the Orphan of Kos in Bloodborne is going to be less impactful at 5 viewers than at 50, as an example of that.

the main difference between me and some of the Vtubers you described is that I still pull an decent amount of viewers, and that is because I don't target other Vtubers.
it's easy to grow a following on "Vtuber twitter" with a sprinkle of hating lolis, some png drops, "unpopular" opinions, posting fake dms, maybe even a skeb giveaway.

Anyone have opinions on streaming popular games vs more obscure/indie games? I guess popular games (like Apex) has a larger audience but it's also saturated with big streamers, while non-mainstream games have a smaller audience but also less streamers to stand out from. The only advice for a 0view is to make sure you know what you want to do. If you start trying random things without a main goal, the people that followed you for said thing will eventually leave. Pick a theme before you start and work around it. Don't shift constantly to "try things out". You should already know what kind of chuuba you want to be before you start streaming.
An example of this are people that act heavily in character for one stream, but next one they're just talking a regular person playing games.

>The only advice for a 0view is to make sure you know what you want to do.
You've never streamed before. How are you supposed to know what you want to do? You need to start and experiment often and frequently until you find the thing that works for you.

Watch this again: https://youtu.be/0i9gkprYekI
You will never be able to come up with the perfect streaming idea without ever streaming or experimenting. You must do that to find your thing. You have to throw shit at the wall to see what sticks. Or you end up like the dozens of /wvt/chuubas who are all stagnating right now.

> the people that followed you for said thing will eventually leave.
When you're a 0view, followers don't matter. You'll get pity follows, you get bored follows, whatever. None of it matters. They're not important at all and meaningless. They're not the ones who will ensure your success so if they leave nothing is lost.

The people who stop by your 0view streams are people who don't care about you. They care about chatting a small streamer and getting some interaction. That's it. Once you hit 10 views, they'll never show up again. They're not important.

>You should already know what kind of chuuba you want to be before you start streaming.
Wrong. As I've already said, you've never streamed. How do you know what you want to do if you've never streamed. I started out wanting to be a zatsudan League of Legends ARAM channel because I thought it would be a fun gimmick with a well recognized game in the background. Now I almost exclusively do literature readings and paid back my model plus hardware from the subs and donos due to the success.

>An example of this are people that act heavily in character for one stream, but next one they're just talking a regular person playing games.
This example is really dumb because it makes a lot of assumptions that don't actually happen in reality. The dumbest assumption being that viewers who show up to what might be a one off stream are coming back with the expectation that it's the exact same thing. You're thinking about a tv show not livestreams.

The thread Ayuuchi banged out on twitter is very much along my same mindset though for folks that want to really take content "seriously". my big thing is remembering.
1. it often takes a long time to find relevancy or have opportunities present themselves
2. What can be defined as success is a HUGE range
3.Nothing is owed to any of us as broadcasters. if you go in with that attitude folks will smell it a mile out. instead create value, which is a whole THING and journey in and of itself.

Stay awesome and keep tryin /asp/

Have a script for when you get raided.
Personally, I have one for when I get the first follow of the stream, and a different one for when I get raided. I don't get enough subs for that to be worth setting up, but I'd definitely think about it if I were doing speedruns.

Set up unique sounds for different things - even if it's just you saying "OMG A RAID/HOST/SUB/FOLLOW/BIT"; because that way you will know what's going on, know which one to lurch into, and can say
"Thanks for the raid! I'm [abc] the [def] vtuber, currently attempting a speedrun of [lmn]! Can a mod shout out our raider, and when I reach a safespace/die, I'll check out chat!"

Do this before it becomes a problem. Practice it, and you'll be fine.

I saw on her page she posted a timeline
- 1st stream 4th June 2020
- 100 viewers 27th August (84 days after starting)
- 500 followers 31st August (88 days, 5.6 per day)
- 1000 followers 28th September (116 days, 8.6 per day; 17.9 from 500 )
- 2000 followers 9th December (188 days, 16.9 per day; 13.9 p/day from 1000)
These figures are outrageous to me. I was getting maybe 1 per day for my first few months.

I feel like a LOT of vocal streamers are either the SUPER fast growth (like Ayuuchii), or super slow growth (saw someone on reddit say they'd been streaming 8 months and were on 45 followers).

it's an anime girl in a hoodie, about as generic as you can get. but just get started you can figure shit out as you stream, build a community and come up with fun inside jokes with your viewers that you can add onto your model as doodads later.

It's basic, but cute and well done for basic.

I tried other hair colors and I didn't really like the outcome.
