Gifted memberships on youtube are useless. In twitch it makes sense since they don't have superchats so donating directly to the streamer is not as flashy as gifting subs. But youtube has superchats and whales can already flex with superchats (rainbow, multiple reds), so the amount of money the vtuber earns won't change, it would just make part of the superchat money go to gifted memberships. Same amount of money but now with more members so the membership value decreases.
Maybe a very small minority will think of renewing the membership, but it's not worth it imo

So what's the point of having memberships then? Or to be specific, what's the point of members only streams if anyone can get in? The whole point of being a member is that from time to time you can get away from the grey spammers and have a more intimate experience. Gifted memberships just filter EVERYONE and especially members (which now means nothing) into a fully passive position of observers. It just makes the gulf between the chuuba and her actual members grow deeper and it all becomes more like a passive experience of watching TV. In other words, a members only stream becomes just another stream. There's no way your chuuba will let her guard down or be more relaxed ever again.

I'm aware that's an US problem, but that's the point - US. This shit just doesn't fly in the EU, and whoever makes a decent streaming platform will redelegate youtube and Google to the dustbin. I don't even use any google service apart from youtube by necessity. I use Yandex and DDG for searches for instance, and Yandex finds everything.

Putting that aside this is just a bullet in the knee for a whole lot of chuubas and it'll result in worse, more sterile content. It completely destroys the point of memberships. Who even came up with this retarded concept of gifted memberships and why? The whole thing is counterintuitive and effectively destroys the whole concept of "being a member." Why even BE a member? The whole thing hinges on our willingness to support a chuuba, but it's utterly sleazy and cynical, it's an exploitative business practice. The garbage that aren't members in the first place aren't invested in a chuuba or are literal kids, and bringing either of them in (especially the first variety) will just sterilize the content, make the chuuba act and be "professional" just like in the usual streams and completely remove the sense of willing support us members express through membership.

And then there's the trolling, the raids, the potential for harm. The whole thing is just a disaster from start to finish. The "best case" scenario is us paying extra for a higher tier membership, which is just fleecing, an amoral business practice. The only time I've ever seen a sub-only stream on Twitch it was done by fallenshadow (found the link in case anyone doesn't believe me https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1234387759 ). I could see some of the smaller EN corpos that double-dip YT and Twitch (phase connect, cyberlive, etc) doing it but I don't follow most of them so I can't say if they have or will.
