The general rule of thumb is Twitch if your content is primarily based on livestreaming and YouTube if your content is primarily pre-recorded and edited.

>Do you think there's an audience for X, Y, Z content?
First, ask yourself if you would watch a streamer of your skill and experience. Second, do a check on social media and look to see if other streamers are already creating similar content. Don't limit yourself to vtubers, include traditional real life streamers to scope out a potential audience.

I have been trying to get the ball rolling as a nonhuman humanoid (non furry) character but its really hard to feel like I'm going to make it when all of the biggest ones seem to rely on being an anime girl/boy

i dunno, I think a lot of people like "Weird stuff". I like to blame it on the fact that I don't have the voice to play something with simp-appeal but its honestly probably more like just not putting enough into it.

Both of my characters are humanoid, just cartoony. "mascot" is definitely closer. I kept it vague because I know some IRL friends browse here but I guess they do know I have been going back and forth on it. I play as an alien right now, and I am considering switching to a clown because I felt like the alien just doesn't have enough range.

it started as a discord for some power hungry TBA who never debuted but wanted to larp as a manager. the culture they have is one of toxic positivity and menhera rants. there is nothing of value you can get from the discord other than a negative reputation and association with 4chan. the "private" nature of the discord also makes it too easy for chuubas to say shit about others and fosters a very shit view and approach to being a chuuba.

Say I have the choice between 2D and 3D, and I've got god tier people to commission for both. Which would be most limiting for vtubing in general? It looks like VtubeStudio is way more versatile in general than VSeeFace but VSF has the upside of being 3D.

3D. The unlimited freedom to use that same model for animations, motion capping in VRChat or (if you got an Iphone 11) far better facial recognition is all just unmatched compared to 2D. That being said a TON of 3D toobas looks like complete shit so make sure you're getting what you bargain for.

It's both to protect your chuuba self from your real self (if you're female and in a relationship, or whatever); and to protect your real self from yourchuuba self - someone taking a clip of something you said out of context, and passing it to family members.

I do hit stream. I watch them myself muted to make sure they're running. I should clarify I allegedly get one or two that pop in per stream but usually immediately disappear. I know because the twitch summary says I had unique viewers.

So far I've been playing Dark Souls and Fighting games. I understand the latter is very niche but at the same time a lot of the more popular games don't really entertain me and I don't feel like people would like watching me be utterly unenthusiastic about a game.

Checking your response, you're playing Dark Souls and Fighting...
Checking the Dark Souls games (1, 2, 3 in that order), for those with Partner or Affiliate numbers (75 viewers, or 3 viewers, respectively); these fill the top 4/1/9 and 37/29/60. Why would anyone scroll down past that many to find you? If you're not doing speed or challenge runs, what possible reason do they have to come and watch you?
Instead, let's look at Crash Bandicoot. It's an old game, doesn't have anywhere near as many followers, but there's only two channels. If anyone wants to watch Crash, you're in a podium position. People will see you.
Not many people will find you through browsing categories... But some might. And you might get lucky with a raid to get some viewers.

I have had good (for a small channel) luck with picking old favourite games. Ones you enjoyed as a kid. Sure, there's next-to-no followers for the category, but if nobody else is streaming, you'll get 100% of the ones that want to watch it.

Also, make sure you're adding tags to your stream. If you're LGBTQ+, or non-white, it's a great way to get some support.

Don't do super niche content, because nobody watches it.
But avoid oversaturated categories. Look at the game category, and think about your viewer number. Are you IMMEDIATELY visible on joining the category?

Then don't stream it hoping for numbers.
Stream it for fun. Stream it because you love the game, the lore, the setting, the art, or because your waifu is in it.
But if viewers have to scroll past 30 other people to find you... Then they're not going to find you. Self post, shill yourself on twitter, join discords, be agressive in your marketing there - I pinged everyone I could for a recent celebration, and got ~15 new followers in the first five minutes after posting. None still turn up, but it's validation on the numbers, and it makes people more likely to stick around

Whenever i enter a stream with a female model and an obvious male voice comes out of the character i instantly get disappointed and leave
I have no idea how hard it is to actually develop a halfway convincing female voice but think of this as a way to also train for it
Lilyhops is a good example (even she even is actually trans) because i could at least imagine her as my little sister but most of the time it feels like people are not even trying to do a different voice
I would recommend heavily focusing in trying to achieve a female voice for at least an hour before starting to stream, or maybe only do a few months of training and streaming to later debut using only a female voice

shilling on reddit gets you zero views. everyone knows how desperate twitch streamers are to shill their channel and being a chuuba is no different. you can look at the subreddits for chuubas and realize none of them have more than 2-3 upvotes and even less people clicking through to watch.

dedicated subreddits for games and communities also do not like it when you shill. the best thing you can share is a highlight clip but let's be honest, no one is going to watch your slightly above average Apex clip when pro players pull off moves like that every 2 minutes.

Since I’m going to start as png and going to do a soft debut/start, I was thinking of doing a couple short audio clips or videos that even if nobody sees it initially, I’d have some content. I only have a general idea right now which would involve maybe initially a really bad radio transmission, maybe from some distance location or something like that… but the script is completely blank otherwise. Maybe could be a lore-building exercise too?
I almost want to see if I can somehow make all of the audio practical effects instead of trying to do it digitally, might be neat.

Vroid is a modelling tool just like anything else. Put in the effort, maybe even learn a little bit of blender to make some other adjustments (at the very least import to unity so you can add extra blendshapes to the face, pic related), and you'll have a model that most people won't be able to tell was even made with vroid.
One protip, get an artist to do a reference first before you start modelling. The end result will look a lot more polished than something you made up as you went along.

start networking with existing streamers who are making the content you like so you can learn from them while putting your stuff together. this doesn't mean sending business emails. just chill in their chat and hang out. speak up now and then and just make yourself part of the community. you want to learn several things

Are you newer to VRC? VRFunny has been around for years, he used to be a clipper for the oldschool VRChat players. Grew a community through that, and then eventually started to stream. This is something that is almost exclusive to that communnity, Zentreya, Artsy and I believe SeanVR used to be the same way. Mutes and TTS typically don't work outside of VRChat aside from few corner cases but it's just a part of VRC player, streamer, and viewer "culture".

You can typically get around the midroll ads, but the one at the start is a coin toss and almost impossible to circumvent when it plays, which is roughly 75% of the time for me. I think there is a browser extension/user script that tries to get around it, but even that doesn't always work. Sitting around for 30 seconds before being able to watch a stream is fucking retarded. This includes when using Streamlink which just shows a placeholder for that time, but you still have to wait.

i would say it's more the lack of transcoding as someone that likes watching smaller channnels that 9/10 are streaming in a quality i can't even watch but it's still 10 times better than trying to use the youtube search engine to watch any vtuber

The ads is just my biggest gripe. I've tried using Twitch on an off in the past 10-11 years and the site just straight up fails to load sometimes. Could be me using ublock/umatrix but even when I disable them some shit just fails to load.
Some of the points you describe are what make it a better streamer experience, i.e. discoverability, raids, channel points to encourage interaction (that helps the streamer far more than most viewers). Youtube's search for livestream-oriented content is certainly abysmal, among its other issues, but they're all things that more affect the streamer. When I said viewer experience, I meant viewing, meaning you're already watching.
Youtube also allows for good bitrates which is nice. Twitch's restrictions make 1080p a non-starter if you're playing something with constant movement, and it's best to stick to 720p or 900p as a result. And even then I sometimes forget there are people watching with shit download speeds that might not be able to watch those somehow.

There's a middle ground. If they are just starting or need money, they take whatever they can get. However, they will place a lot of value on things that will get a lot of eyes on their work and do those if possible. I hope I'm not overstepping by doing this but I really liked your initial design because it reminded me of Neptunia and Frame Arm Girls. desu, I'm not digging the pale yellow and i much prefer your original color scheme so I designed this with that in mind. I think all the mechanical parts can be exaggerated more to give your girl more shape. For the asymmetric leggings, I'm not sure if the right leg is apart of the bodysuit or just a really long sock? If it's the former, the bodysuit should have trim to separate it from the leg. If it's the latter, the sock should have a trim to separate it from the body. idk if that makes sense?

I added mechanical parts to the leg because I though it would look good with barefeet. But if you want shoes, I would disregard the mechanical legs and recommend chunky shoes.

For a lot of the top guys, yes. I'm a bit of a schizo and like to survey people's audiences to see who else they follow and for a lot of the top males their most active chatters, donators, etc exclusively watch other guys with a few female artists mixed in.

Go to someone like Frost's chat, grab a random chatter and use a site like TwitchFollowing or CommanderRoot 's see who else the watch. A lot of their following lists look similar to this and they're blatantly female chatters, many with their IRL twitter accounts linked to their Twitch.
