What is /asp/?

A thread for aspiring vtubers! Whether your goal is to make the journey as an independent streamer or to gain experience and build a portfolio for agency auditions. Let's help each other grow and make it. Indies are welcome to selfpost, but shill responsibly. Share your knowledge, insights, feedback, discuss what has worked and what hasn't worked for you. And always remember to do your research before posting personally identifying information. That includes both in this thread and in your audition applications to agencies.

FAQ:
>Do I need a fully rigged model to be a vtuber?
Nope! You can get started as a simple .png character!

>I want to learn how to rig Live2D models, where do I go?
Brian Tsui (of Iron Vertex), Kira Omori and the official Live2D YouTube channels have many tutorials available.

>Where can I find artists/riggers?
vtuber.gg, ArtStation, DeviantArt, Twitter, Reddit, Skeb.jp, etc.

>I just want to get started, can I buy pre-made models?
Yes! Live2D models can be purchased off nizima.com (Live2D's official marketplace) or booth.pm (general Japanese indie artist website). Be sure to check compatibility with your facial tracking software!

>Where can I learn how to digital market myself?
https://learndigital.withgoogle.com/digitalgarage

>Where can I find some good games to stream?
https://twitchtracker.com/games
https://sullygnome.com/

>Twitch or YouTube?
The general rule of thumb is Twitch if your content is primarily based on livestreaming and YouTube if your content is primarily pre-recorded and edited.

>Do you think there's an audience for X, Y, Z content?
First, ask yourself if you would watch a streamer of your skill and experience. Second, do a check on social media and look to see if other streamers are already creating similar content. Don't limit yourself to vtubers, include traditional real life streamers to scope out a potential audience.

do you all think there's any chance in becoming a successful vtuber without being a cute anime boy/girl?
I have been trying to get the ball rolling as a nonhuman humanoid (non furry) character but its really hard to feel like I'm going to make it when all of the biggest ones seem to rely on being an anime girl/boy

I have been thinking of switching my character while I'm still a blip and becoming something with a little more character range, but even then my other idea isnt an anime person either.

I know it takes a while to get anywhere no matter what, too...

It's incredible hard to become successful as basically a mascot, because that's what people will basically see you as if you aren't a humanoid
I wouldn't even be able to explain why
Even a company as big as Nijisanji only has 2 active non-humanoid members that are mildly successful and it's mostly because of their voices (and the fact that they still are aesthetically cute)
I would say give up on it but i'm a loser

I guess the character I'm using sort of is a mascot.

I'm just trying to fill a hole in the field that I couldn't find when I looked for myself. I just don't really care about a lot of these anime people until they catch my attention with either a game I enjoy or an interesting personality. I'm just not looking to simp I guess.

I figure its hard mostly because simping is what the majority of viewers seem to want to do.

>> No.18476906

>>18476536
I don't even think it's all about simping
Maybe it just has to do with people not liking weird stuff, and something non-humanoid is so outside the norm that most just glaze over it
btw if you are looking into examples i know for a fact that there is a tree and a fridge that i have seen stream on Twitch, i don't remember their names but maybe you can find it in the archive

i dunno, I think a lot of people like "Weird stuff". I like to blame it on the fact that I don't have the voice to play something with simp-appeal but its honestly probably more like just not putting enough into it.

Both of my characters are humanoid, just cartoony. "mascot" is definitely closer. I kept it vague because I know some IRL friends browse here but I guess they do know I have been going back and forth on it. I play as an alien right now, and I am considering switching to a clown because I felt like the alien just doesn't have enough range.

So far I've been playing Dark Souls and Fighting games. I understand the latter is very niche but at the same time a lot of the more popular games don't really entertain me and I don't feel like people would like watching me be utterly unenthusiastic about a game.

I don't mean to be cruel, but if you're getting zero viewers, you've fucked up somewhere.
Checking your response, you're playing Dark Souls and Fighting...
Checking the Dark Souls games (1, 2, 3 in that order), for those with Partner or Affiliate numbers (75 viewers, or 3 viewers, respectively); these fill the top 4/1/9 and 37/29/60. Why would anyone scroll down past that many to find you? If you're not doing speed or challenge runs, what possible reason do they have to come and watch you?
Instead, let's look at Crash Bandicoot. It's an old game, doesn't have anywhere near as many followers, but there's only two channels. If anyone wants to watch Crash, you're in a podium position. People will see you.
Not many people will find you through browsing categories... But some might. And you might get lucky with a raid to get some viewers.

I have had good (for a small channel) luck with picking old favourite games. Ones you enjoyed as a kid. Sure, there's next-to-no followers for the category, but if nobody else is streaming, you'll get 100% of the ones that want to watch it.

Also, make sure you're adding tags to your stream. If you're LGBTQ+, or non-white, it's a great way to get some support.

>> No.18505136

>>18504881
So try and stream more niche content? I always thought it was the opposite since no one is watching niche stuff for a reason.

I've been doing modded runs of Dark Souls 3. That said you raise a fair point that if I'm at the bottom, no one's gonna go looking for me. I usually let obs/twitch just auto tag but clearly that's not enough too.

>> No.18505677

>>18505136
Don't do super niche content, because nobody watches it.
But avoid oversaturated categories. Look at the game category, and think about your viewer number. Are you IMMEDIATELY visible on joining the category?
No?
Then don't stream it hoping for numbers.
Stream it for fun. Stream it because you love the game, the lore, the setting, the art, or because your waifu is in it.
But if viewers have to scroll past 30 other people to find you... Then they're not going to find you. Self post, shill yourself on twitter, join discords, be agressive in your marketing there - I pinged everyone I could for a recent celebration, and got ~15 new followers in the first five minutes after posting. None still turn up, but it's validation on the numbers, and it makes people more likely to stick around

Whenever i enter a stream with a female model and an obvious male voice comes out of the character i instantly get disappointed and leave
I have no idea how hard it is to actually develop a halfway convincing female voice but think of this as a way to also train for it
Lilyhops is a good example (even she even is actually trans) because i could at least imagine her as my little sister but most of the time it feels like people are not even trying to do a different voice
I would recommend heavily focusing in trying to achieve a female voice for at least an hour before starting to stream, or maybe only do a few months of training and streaming to later debut using only a female voice

Also, a lot of the time, trans vtubers have weirdly overly sexual models, which, again, makes it seem like a kink thing.

absolute garbage place to "shill" yourself. if your model and voice don't get someone's willies off you'll be ignored. this is why /wvt/ has been talking about the same group of 30 chuubas for the past year.
>reddit
shilling on reddit gets you zero views. everyone knows how desperate twitch streamers are to shill their channel and being a chuuba is no different. you can look at the subreddits for chuubas and realize none of them have more than 2-3 upvotes and even less people clicking through to watch.

dedicated subreddits for games and communities also do not like it when you shill. the best thing you can share is a highlight clip but let's be honest, no one is going to watch your slightly above average Apex clip when pro players pull off moves like that every 2 minutes.

Vroid is a modelling tool just like anything else. Put in the effort, maybe even learn a little bit of blender to make some other adjustments (at the very least import to unity so you can add extra blendshapes to the face, pic related), and you'll have a model that most people won't be able to tell was even made with vroid.
One protip, get an artist to do a reference first before you start modelling. The end result will look a lot more polished than something you made up as you went along.

don't pick random artists off twitter because scammers bloat that shit. vtuber hype is easy money right now.

look for an artist, ask for quotes. give them a sketch of what you want, include pictures of examples from existing shows, games, movies and shit like that so the artist knows what you're looking for.

talk and be a normal human with them and ask around for the best price. artists know their clients are looking for good value so most of the good ones won't mind that you're asking for quotes.

do some test streamers without a model figure out what content you like to create. you can work on your audio and OBS settings right now without a model so that you sound clear and understandable for viewers.

start networking with existing streamers who are making the content you like so you can learn from them while putting your stuff together. this doesn't mean sending business emails. just chill in their chat and hang out. speak up now and then and just make yourself part of the community. you want to learn several things
>what does this streamer do that i like
>how does their community look like and is that something i also want to achieve
>what is working for them and what is not working
shit like that

good luck chuuba.

These prices are all comparable to artists on Twitter, in fact I'm willing to bet that all these artists are those same twitter artists with "bloated prices". Also lore wasn't the only reason, I initially made the model in vroid studio and, arguably, the male models look like total shit so figured it's my way or the highway.

Are you newer to VRC? VRFunny has been around for years, he used to be a clipper for the oldschool VRChat players. Grew a community through that, and then eventually started to stream. This is something that is almost exclusive to that communnity, Zentreya, Artsy and I believe SeanVR used to be the same way. Mutes and TTS typically don't work outside of VRChat aside from few corner cases but it's just a part of VRC player, streamer, and viewer "culture".

It sucks but it's true. If you don't have that deep voice like vox, then women won't find it attractive. Just like irl, women only like a certain kind of guy (tall, muscular, full head of hair, hunter eyes, chiseled jaw line) and that's it. People only talk about the voice, but that just it at all, if you are not that guy then you can't fake it, if you are too poised by 4chan or just have a different personality it won't work acting that way.

Personally I find Vox and the similars extremely dorkish and would not look up to them as examples at all. That's for guys who have a lot of female friends and has that specific charisma.

In the same way that western and indies break away from the Idol culture to something that fit them better you can probably also be a male vtuber and be more of a "gamer" streamer instead of the faggot type.

I know you want to appeal specially to the female / troon / twitter viewers who are very into "shipping" because that seems the biggest market for male vtubers, but there might be different paths, specially if you are just a dude with a normal voice who likes to play games and not some homo Corpse husband type of guy. The problem is that most of the people who would vibe with your personality think vtubers are lame so you are left with appealing to the twitter coalition.

Not saying it's impossible but a majority of the top males and even mid-sized males either have decent or better voices, act like "faggots" (not sure how flirting with and appealing to girls makes you a fag but sure), or have other skills besides "well yeah i just game". You say it's similar to breaking away from idol culture, but if the top female indies are breaking away from this while none of the top males aren't just "normal voice gamer guy", then odds are that isn't even the problem.

>The problem is that most of the people who would vibe with your personality think vtubers are lame

This is. But even among the normal-streamer audience there's plenty of vtuber fans, the issue is that almost no vtubers (especially /here/ ones) watch any of the top irl streamers aside from Jerma, which no one is good enough to replicate. They're all fairly new to streaming and too "poised by 4chan" to enjoy anything else to begin with, it's all shit content to them if it isn't anime.

I will finally be moving out in the next few months and plan to start streaming, mostly as motivation to play more games since I often get distracted otherwise and knowing I'm doing it live has kept me focused more the few times I've done it in the past.
I'm planning to use Youtube since I hated Twitch even back in 2010/2011 when I streamed on ngame a bit, and the viewer experience has only gotten worse (I know most don't give a shit and that's why it's the biggest streaming site). Community connection is one of pillars of streaming, whether it's your community or a community of your peers and friends you make, not using discord or twitter completely removes that and essentially makes you invisible because you have no way to network, interact with your community, and you lose a platform to get attention from.

They splice ads into the HLS playlist. You can typically get around the midroll ads, but the one at the start is a coin toss and almost impossible to circumvent when it plays, which is roughly 75% of the time for me. I think there is a browser extension/user script that tries to get around it, but even that doesn't always work. Sitting around for 30 seconds before being able to watch a stream is fucking retarded. This includes when using Streamlink which just shows a placeholder for that time, but you still have to wait.

The ads is just my biggest gripe. I've tried using Twitch on an off in the past 10-11 years and the site just straight up fails to load sometimes. Could be me using ublock/umatrix but even when I disable them some shit just fails to load.
Some of the points you describe are what make it a better streamer experience, i.e. discoverability, raids, channel points to encourage interaction (that helps the streamer far more than most viewers). Youtube's search for livestream-oriented content is certainly abysmal, among its other issues, but they're all things that more affect the streamer. When I said viewer experience, I meant viewing, meaning you're already watching.
Youtube also allows for good bitrates which is nice. Twitch's restrictions make 1080p a non-starter if you're playing something with constant movement, and it's best to stick to 720p or 900p as a result. And even then I sometimes forget there are people watching with shit download speeds that might not be able to watch those somehow.

I've streamed as a png before, but I wasn't very popular (40-50avg). I stopped streaming when I started school but I have a lot of freetime now so I wanna get back into it with a new model that isn't attached to my old identity.

I know how to rig, as in I got the basics down, but it looks fucking awful and I kinda wanna have a good rigger do it. I don't manage to make angle X look good no matter how hard I try. kinda looks like gura's rig but a little less shit

nta but professional riggers are completely different from rigging your own model

Hi! I hope I'm not overstepping by doing this but I really liked your initial design because it reminded me of Neptunia and Frame Arm Girls. desu, I'm not digging the pale yellow and i much prefer your original color scheme so I designed this with that in mind. I think all the mechanical parts can be exaggerated more to give your girl more shape. For the asymmetric leggings, I'm not sure if the right leg is apart of the bodysuit or just a really long sock? If it's the former, the bodysuit should have trim to separate it from the leg. If it's the latter, the sock should have a trim to separate it from the body. idk if that makes sense?

I added mechanical parts to the leg because I though it would look good with barefeet. But if you want shoes, I would disregard the mechanical legs and recommend chunky shoes.

For a lot of the top guys, yes. I'm a bit of a schizo and like to survey people's audiences to see who else they follow and for a lot of the top males their most active chatters, donators, etc exclusively watch other guys with a few female artists mixed in.

Go to someone like Frost's chat, grab a random chatter and use a site like TwitchFollowing or CommanderRoot 's see who else the watch. A lot of their following lists look similar to this and they're blatantly female chatters, many with their IRL twitter accounts linked to their Twitch.

One week in and I’m halfway to affiliate woooo I guess people don’t hate babiniku as much as I thought they might. How come some other TBAs are already affiliate/partner before they even start streaming though?

Anyone who has affiliate or partner before they debut which is what I assume you meant by "start streaming" was either already a partner prior to becoming a Vtuber, or in the case of most affiliates they were streaming before any official debut

It’s no problem at all.
I had at least a couple thoughts about the left leg, both as a separate legging and also a part of the bodysuit, but I’ve leaned more toward it being all one piece. I did think about mechanical legs before, but I didn’t try it out for some reason, I’ll definitely play around with that and some of the other ideas that you added in. Thanks!
