I think for a lot of people the idol thing doesn't specifically appeal to them. On this site at least there is a lot of animosity towards nijisanji due to the /jp/ thread and the fact that japanese nijisanji fans hurt hololive in a lot of ways (whether or not you believe that is true doesn't matter, that's the prevailing opinion on this site). Outside of here, they were both unlucky but also dropped the ball themselves. Hololive blew the fuck up in the west due to various reasons and that's where the vast majority of fansubbing and discussion is in the west. It also doesn't help that they ignored the English-speaking market and/or only half-heartedly threw them some bones. Now that holoEN has proven that there is a large market, they are scrambling to get a piece of that pie with their own real EN branch, a subreddit, employing translators and buying ads on youtube. Sadly, I believe the train has already left the station. Momentum is hugely important and Nijisanji has barely any in the west. Their EN branch might become mildly successful, but I doubt it will live up to the expectations of the suits at ichikara.

You'll struggle to get a proper full picture of Nijisanji if you don't know at least some japanese. Unlike Hololive, there isn't a major clip culture around it. There is, however, extensive secondary material in the form of a massive Nijisanji wiki on the internet. It's in japanese, but it's more than enough to get a newbie started.

The /jp/ threads are full-on current content. Links to ongoing streams, new art etc. The focus isn't so much on discussion and speculation. Newbies that ignore the old "lurk moar" rule of 4chan tend to enter the threads and ask questions no one can be arsed to answer. Bringing up months old scandals, dragging in weird narratives, requesting streamer recommendations and such. Stuff that has been answered a thousand times before, is easily googled, and/or is just (unintentional) shitposting at its core.

Also what the guy above me said, there was a drive to reduce the tribalism that was shitting up other threads and the board at the time. The Nijisanji thread chose seclusion and gatekeeping so they could be left to enjoy their niche thing in peace. Discussion there is possible, just don't be stupid about it.

In terms of pivoting for a slice of the EN market, 2019-2020 Ichikara still frankly didn't do a very good job. Their clip channel has good content, but either they aren't playing the algorithm well or they aren't advertising it well because even now it just sees no views, and their subreddit is seemingly dead in the water, a fraction of the size of even the generic vtuber subreddit. I honestly believe that had they forced their way into the western market faster and less half-heartedly then they would have shut Cover out completely. Instead they did this retarded IN rebranding shit that hurt their western branding more than helped it, and put no real effort into it for years. I'll tell you why I think their initial EN push with the translation channel didn't work. The translators that they took on were dogshit; they were either existing shitty hololive translators looking for a quick buck, or they were too new to understand to know which clips to choose, or both.
Making scream compilations, funny english moments and collab clips without first introducing any of the streamers was never going to work.
They could have literally copied in chronological order the popular clips starting from 2018 and translated them and it would have worked out. And I know the faggot translators from discord and twitter lurk these threads, so maybe they'll read this and take something from it.
