And that gives him the right to shittalk her like that?
Don't get me wrong, I don't deny that he's done a lot for her, but even with all that he HAS done, he still doesn't have the right to say these things, especially since he considers himself her "official" translator. You don't see the other translators do these sorts of things with the girls they translate for, do you?
He's a prick, plain and simple, despite all that he's done.

Not that anon you're replying to, I'm your Friend from before. You're doing fine for sure. I am still keeping a look on your translations, but I haven't seen anything notable in quite a while! I can see you are improving and not translating stuff you don't really understand anymore. Thanks for doing what you do, I'd rather have someone do this because they love FBK instead of just for clout like the other guy.

The only mistake I can even think of recently is that 共鳴者 doesn't mean what's in the dictionary but is a specific term for the player characters in the TRPG system she uses, but that isn't worth a correction. There's some in-game concepts or mechanics called 共鳴 and 共鳴判定 but I have no idea what exactly they refer to or how they work, I just kept hearing her say these over and over again during these play sessions.

>> No.20012223

>>20011363
Someone else here.

The japanese use many words with metaphorical meanings so it is probably related somehow

共鳴 is resonance, 共鳴者 would be person that resonates, or people that resonate together, in the physical terms waves that add to one another by being in the same frequency.
In an RPG you could see as people that have the same goals or alignment.

共鳴判定 would maybe be an alignment decision depending on the players actions maybe.

Yeah, resonant person or something is what I would have gone with if I was forced to translate it literally, but I'd actually just have gone with player character in the context of that tweet. Our Friend went with "fellow traveller". Seems like it's a word that can mean political (communist etc) sympathsizer as well.

From my very vague understanding of the mechanics of that TRPG you seem mostly right in your assumption. I think 共鳴 is some sort of major mechanic similar to sanity in that game, and 共鳴判定 is some sort of event where you roll as a check to see if you succeed with an action depending on how resonant you are.

Good luck and thanks for your work.
I am just an intermediary japanese learner, but something I learned from a teacher is that sometimes you need to downright learn the mechanics of what you are trying to translate before you can do it.

He had to translate a japanese bothanics book for work and in the end he had to go out of his way to learn bothanics first to make sense of anything, and he is well beyond N1 level.

I'm only intermediary in Japanese as well, I just have a good sense for language and translation in general. What your teacher told you is true, but only to a certain extent. You definitely need a rough understanding of what you are translating, but you don't need to fully understand all the intricacies, you'll usually acquire that as you go. You will naturally converge to a certain field and its respective genres of text as a professional translator and as a consequence pick up a better understanding of your field as you research difficult sentences or terminology that you need more background information on. If your teacher was hired to translate an entire very specific book without any prior knowledge on the field, that's rather unusual and a super difficult task. That kind of assignment usually goes to people specialized in that field.
>>20013032
Yeah, you are right. FBK continues to inspire all of us and it's a beautiful thing. Wouldn't have thought this place of all things would be the definite best place for Sukonbu to hang out, but it is what it is. I like our little corner of this board.

>> No.20017231

>>20016736
Yeah, that is the problem with "exotic" languages like japanese. That translation also happens to have happened a good 15 to 20 years ago as well so I guess they took what they could get at the time. It is still a rare language but maybe today less than before.

I agree also, perhaps I misunderstood people into thinking he became a bothanist, which he did not, but he had to get a lot of basic important concepts noone ever hears about. It's almost like a language inside another language really.

It happens a lot in different specific fields, and RPG gaming can be considered one as well, I play a lot of video game RPGs in japanese and the ammount of shitty words I learned that I will never use in a normal conversation ever is not even funny.

I have another teacher who is a singer and has known japanese for over 20 years, he says when he goes into books about singing, music and melody to this day he still gets BTFO by the ammount of things he learns and how different (and marvelous, his own words) the japanese use their words to convey some things.

Ah, yeah, everything was way different back then. Spread of the internet made it much easier to get in contact with experts, different story back then, they mostly had to take whoever was available, especially with more obscure languages. Japanese is less obscure today, though I would imagine it'd still not be easy (and very expensive) to find expert translators on very niche topics.

Tell me about it, I know so many useless military terms from RPGs and anime. I still mine all that crap anyway because it makes the kind of media I like to consume easier, so it's more efficient for my specific purposes than learning more "useful" words that I would never encounter in my Japanese consumption anyway. Also you're right, field specific terminology can get very very deep. I translate a lot of finance related documents (not Japanese, I'm nowhere near that good) for work and I'm starting to feel like half an accountant already with how much intricate stuff I've had to research over time. It's as you said, each field is like learning a new language, almost.

Anyway, I'm fucking pumped for FBK's Sekiro tomorrow. This is almost guaranteed to become one of her all-time great series. Can't fucking wait.

That said, and while I am just as hyped for her Sekiro as the rest of my friends here, I actually kind of wanted her to play Needy Girl Overdose after watching Koyori play it. But I guess after February's events she might not want to touch that sort of game.

There's no way she would ever touch that time with a ten foot pole, she is way too savvy to know that it wouldn't be a great idea for her. Yeah her approach isn't the greatest. I can understand why she does it though, I feel like in the very beginning every combat encounter is overwhelming and you are lacking the tools (and skills) to engage with a lot of stuff, but if she doesn't explore she will not get them so it will stay impossibly hard. She needs some time to adapt to the game still.

Also man, the stealth aspect of this game is such bullshit for these mini bosses. It's forcing you to waste like 5+ minutes to kill off all the adds and remove the first health bar from the boss every single time just to waste your time. Really not a fan of that design choice.

>>20080906
Can't speak much about anywhere beyond mid-game because I didn't get all that far, but I think the mini boss she ran away from in the courtyard right after the Chained Ogre is even worse than the estate, there's like five archers and three other dudes and having to clean all of them up and then backstabbing the mini boss only to die over and over again because I wasn't that great at the game's mechanics yet was one of the most tedious experiences I ever had playing a video game. The dude with the spear she brute forced earlier was another very annoying case, every attempt takes like five minutes of clean up beforehand.

Personally, I think this is pretty bad advice, I would just translate it correctly and maybe add a note like you sometimes do at the bottom that she made a typo if you feel like the "full experience" matters enough to mention it (depends on the case really). If you deliberately leave it as it is, that kind of defeats the purpose of translating the line in the first place and isn't really the "full experience" because your target audience would just assume that is what she intended to say. In your translated version, you tried to "make the mistake work" in a way so there's no way to tell anything was wrong with it in the first place, whereas the Japanese reader could immediate tell that she made a mistake because it didn't make much sense. But of course, that's just my opinion, you can handle cases like that however you want.

Yeah, the Spirit Emblem cap is especially limiting early - mid-game Sekiro, and it really disincentivizes the use of some of the spicier Combat Arts. On the other hand, if timed and used properly, you can skip 2/3 phases of later bossfights with some tools (Firecrackers and True Monk are a prime example).

That really is a balance issue, since it discourages experimentation with all these tools we have available.

>> No.20088549

Quick summary of important points:
She also wants to play Dark Souls 3, Bloodborne and Elden Ring in that order at some point. Said she wants the hype around Elden Ring to calm down a bit first, because everyone is playing it right now and she also wants to give the Sukonbu a chance to experience the game for themselves before spoiling it in her streams. Sekiro was a lot of fun, so much fun that she lost track of time and all of sudden it was three in the morning. It's like a swamp. She was a bit frustrated that she didn't manage to beat Lady Butterfly and wants to keep going tomorrow evening, but it will be a shorter stream with the main goal being to beat Lady Butterfly. She will be farming some money to get whatever that merchant up the staircase after the boss sells before tomorrow's stream, but she won't proceed into any new areas we didn't visit today yet. There was also a lot of K-Cup-Kitsune banter, but in the end, she admitted that while she wouldn't be opposed to a tiny bit more, she is fine with her size as it is.

She wants a bigger chest but wants to respect Mito's feelings, and I know Mito wants to play with fubuki's design but he wants to respect Fubuki's feelings, this will stay like this until management or another Holo force them to change the status quo.

I did eventually end up watching it, but it's a little difficult even getting the membership. The site is translated funny, so some of it didn't make sense at first. For example, it asks for your name in hiragana, but it says (niece) or something like that. If you try writing in katakana (because I'm not Japanese) it won't accept it.
