A thread for aspiring vtubers! Whether your goal is to make the journey as an independent streamer or to gain experience and build a portfolio for agency auditions. The general rule of thumb is Twitch if your content is primarily based on livestreaming and YouTube if your content is primarily pre-recorded and edited.

>Do you think there's an audience for X, Y, Z content?
First, ask yourself if you would watch a streamer of your skill and experience. Second, do a check on social media and look to see if other streamers are already creating similar content. Don't limit yourself to vtubers, include traditional real life streamers to scope out a potential audience.

I wish I could create good content to entertain people. But everything I create feels just like gigacringe. This is the main reason I just keep practicing, making plans and scenarios but never completing anything and putting it out there. Are there any ways to gain more confidence in my content?

I know it sounds stupid to say, but don't think about it that much. You'll gain confidence with stream reps. You can keep working to make great content and improve what you're doing, but if you're not putting yourself out there, you'll never get over that initial hurdle. "Kill the part of you that cringes" is honestly the only (and best) advice I've heard. Power through and once you find something that happens to be cringe but also does well, you'll have finally killed it. I've not big at all but I decided to bite the bullet and make one of those "wiggling with a cute vtuber asset" things I thought I was too good for and it introduced me to some new people who I talk to now which helped me with viewership (networking) and overall confidence. It just takes that one success to turn "I'm making a fool of myself." to "I was being autistic for caring about this to begin with."

Been working on some concept art for a spaceman, but I cant get a grip on what a good color scheme would be, any tips or ideas?

I enter that category. My voice doesn't fit my model, it's a premade from Booth but still really good. I wished I could do a loli voice but both here and on stream people have told me voice doesn't matter as much. Yes, it would be good if voice matched model, but its not a deal breaker, at least for most people.
I'm considering getting my own custom model once I have the means though.

they both went pretty well! my views on the saturday one were actually climbing throughout the whole thing which was surprising because i got raided and not many people stayed but i still ended up at 19 viewers at one point but had to end the stream since i can't stream for too long regularly

How do you network and shill yourself if you want to go down the youtube prerecorded path with video essays and whatnot before jumping to streaming? Does it make sense if I network mainly in the vtuber streaming sphere and use twitter, join their discord etc etc like most aspies who stream?
Because I assume there would be some differences since the viewerbase for youtube is bigger than the niche of vtuber streaming.

Stop caring what other people think. This is a skill that you can learn and will learn as you keep streaming. The biggest streamers like Jerma, Ludwig, Ironmouse have one thing in common and it’s they’re being themselves without worrying about what others think (and THAT is actually what charisma is). If you feel sad then cry, if you feel angry then mald and use that to farm content. People like twomad are what yoga practioners wish they were when it comes to being comfortable in your own skin.

When starting streaming, what is a good way to get used to it and not burning yourself out or screwing yourself up the next day for work?
As an example for me, I generally work 9-5, and don’t usually get home until after 6pm. I also have to be up by at least 7:30 to leave for work.
I’m thinking at the most maybe 2 times a week, probably Tuesdays or Wednesdays and Fridays just to get streaming more than once a week around 9pm ADT.

For too damn long ha I been putting off streaming for one reason or another. (Some justified, some not, like vision issues vs being just plain nervous)
I finally have a PC where I can actually play games without everything lagging like hell (unlink laptops), I have a capture device which I should be able to use without mic audio dropping, and a decent library of games to choose from.
No excuses.

Is anybody else having issues with tags on Twitch right now?
I played a game with some music on in the background last week, so I used the "electronic music" and "jazz" tags. I've tried removing them in both Stream Manager and OBS since then and they'll disappear for a few seconds only to then reappear, meaning I effectively can not remove them from any of my subsequent streams.
I've already submitted a ticket to Twitch support, but I'd like to know if any of you guys are having similar issues.

if you really enjoy streaming then in your position i'd probably schedule a 7:30 PM stream so you have about an hour to decompress/eat/ set up/etc and that gives you a solid 2-3 hours to stream and have a couple hours afterwards to exist
if you're like me and sleep for like 6 hours that would give you 3-4 hours of free time afterwards but yeah it can be tiring to fit that all in on work days
personally i work 8-3 and stream from 4-7/5-8 which gives me like 4-5 hours of free time afterwards to do everything else and get decent sleep and i usually stream 4 days a week

i've never bought one but i recommend deepl translator for moon runes!! you can probably pm someone who has a vtuber you're interested in and ask them some questions with the deepl translator. it's very accurate. i used it and ran it by my friend who is fluent in japanese and she said it was perfectly understandable in japanese.

Just get kanji/kana for whatever kind of model u want (e.g. "witch girl") and search for it, then click the big pink button. Don't forget to translate description though before you buy as some sellers don't allow streaming/monetization of their model, only plug and play. Also if the model is one of a kind, there's gonna be "1/1" somewhere on the thumbnail.

It's all in Chinese and it's a little trickier to get accurate understanding of TOS to a model, but there's some great ones out there. And like nizima there should be an interactive view of the model.
Also check vtuber.gg and twitter as there are a lot of people selling premade models too. Keywords "selling", "vtuber", "model", "psd", adoptable", and "rigged" if you don't want to search for someone to rig it later

I just ordered a stream deck.
I'm committing to this.
Is a lotta money to fuck around with, and I play gacha.
I know it's not necessary, but every time I clicking on different scenes in OBS, either my (cheap) mouse will bug out and go to the corner of the screen or I'll misclick and go to the wrong scene.

If I set remove the Mouth Form keyforms and leave them blank, only using the Mouth Open keyform, will that make the mouth only open and close, not bothering to track the expression? Or will it mean that if it detects you smiling, it won't know what to display and would set it to neutral?

I have used several Android apps on old phones to turn them into webcams on my PC. Not much you can do in the realm of customization asides from colour, exposure lock, disabling manual focus... y'know, all the stuff you would probably end up doing with a $100 webcam anyway. Except you could spend under $10 on DroidCam OBS or whatever other app. (You have to pay to unlock manual focus and exposure lock, but it's otherwise free)

Webcam quality is subpar anyway due to the tiny sensor. It's cheaper than buying a second phone, but if you already have an old phone lying around chances are it will more or less perform the same.

papi is using both youtube shorts and tiktok with great success, one funny thing that he did on tiktok was to advertise his twitch right on the title, after you get that initial growth and at least like 5 viewers to stick around you can shill yourself less, people here are always afraid of shilling
both also stream consistenly like you said, especially Papi that stream for very long but even when they are offline they maintain their activity on yt/twitter/tiktok, this is pretty important to do if you want to actually create a community

If you want to be a good vtuber you need to be an active viewer of your own vods and others. That’s how you’ll figure out quickly what type of content you want to make. I suggest not playing popular games unless they’re games you’re active in (like Genshin or FF14) don’t play Elden ring or lost ark tho if you want growth

I don't know if you've tried this, but it's total BS. Very few people are actually watching the games they "follow", it's essentially a dead function. The few stragglers you get will just leave when you aren't playing that game.

The one thing that should be focused on the most, regardless of what game you play, is your level of entertainment while playing something. some games are easier than others for people to entertain and play off of but in the end it's your edited down off-site content that attributes the most to growth. You need it.

I don’t get the point of this statement. Would you rather play games that have low follower counts? The higher the follower count the more likely people will tune in and watch you. The strategy has worked well for me so far.

i want this badly to happen, so much from the bottom of my heart. i had a friend who i used to collab with who raided me really early into my chuubing with over 200 people, and eventually when she got twitch partner, she just tossed me like a wet paper towel.
i was always there for her doing my best to help uplift her content and indirectly promote myself and all I got in return was jack shit, not even a position as a third wheel. i loved being around her friends doing group raids. but after partner, she went menhera and pushed everyone away, kept with her core friend group and burned bridges with everyone else.

i want to grow big, not the paltry 15k she has, i want to fucking quintuple that and raid her, and leave a passive aggressive message, "thanks for investing in me during 2020, here's the raid back with interest."

nobody deserves to be treated like this, but I won't delude myself into thinking there'll never be any justice for everything that happened.
