It's funny how at the same time, so much has changed and yet in some aspects, not much has changed at all. Back in the early 90s, there was hardly any anime/manga merch to speak of in the West. Back then, my circle of friends and I used to correspond with Japanese penpals, who would mail us photographs of merch in Japan.
