Really depends. Deepl has a real bad tendency to try and force a cohesive sentence even if you feed it gibberish. Google translate tends to be better if you actually have a decent grasp of the language, as it will give you literal translations you can sort yourself, instead of adding/removing bits to try and make the translation make sense.

The worst part is that deepl (at least the free version) will just straight up delete entire sentences/paragraphs if there are japanese punctuation marks.

DeepL is way better than google but still pretty awful. It's easier to just learn basic japanese than trying to decipher machine translation

Polka's DeepL interaction with Funa today was Kino. I hope we get to see more of this in the future.

agreed. im studying japanese and google translate has been a great tool in my learning process

This honestly doesn't give deepL enough credit. I'm still essentially EoP and reading some like, YA? level webnovel and there'll be paragraphs that I struggle to parse but toss into deepL and it'll point me in the right direction generally. Can definitely help you see how things can line up. Now this is of course if it actually looks like it lines up and works with the definitions, which it commonly does. Of course sometimes deepL is way off or it just skips phrasing it doesn't understand but it's still a pretty insanely good translator considering what that requires for going JP to ENG

Deepl also has a tendency to try and force sfw versions of a nsfw sentence for some reason.

>> No.20809961

You're completely correct but japanese and english are just so fundamentally different that translations can't fully convey anything beyond basic sentences. I am currently learning jp and sometimes type sentences I'm not sure of into deepl and it often completely strips all nuance just as bad as google does. You are seriously handicapping your learning if you rely on any japanese to english translation

I've always found that consulting a dictionary (I used EDRDG JMDict, largely switched over to Jisho which still pulls primarily from that database but has updated UI functionality) is best, but as far as translating full bodies of text goes, google + knowledge > deepl + knowledge > deepl > google is probably how I would rank machine translation.
