It's just the way the language is setup/used verbally. They have words to emphasize something but in actual expression you repeat the word to emphasize it and sometimes the phonation of the repetition becomes another word. A lot of Asian languages do this.

I'm actually faculty at one of the CUNY colleges and from what I've seen I can say it's definitely satire, but not because of gmail. A lot of our organizations, especially the student-run ones, use gmail for official communications.

What really makes it false though, is two things. One, the join date, Jan 2022. CUNY as a system was created in 1961, but quite a few of the colleges were opened as early as the 1840's. If it was really official CUNY social media as it would be for something like an open house, it would have been created a lot earlier. For example, the official twitter for my institution was created in 2011. Second, there isn't really an open house for CUNY in general, just the individual colleges. And if you google CUNY open house, it's not religious as the account implies, and mostly just comprises a bunch of online workshops and seminars, none religion-focused. CUNY in general is a-religious; the most it gets is student-run organizations for the various faiths, the largest ones tending to be the ones for Muslims.

The account's still a very fun read though.

I would love to, but I'm sorry anon, I'm in STEM, not philosophy, so I can't offer anything very specific.

I will say, though, that a lot of the grad school advice given for STEM graduate programs should also apply here. Obviously have the grades and GRE (if necessary, sometimes it's not especially now.) As for experience, hopefully you got to do some sort of internship/mentorship program in the field during your undergrad, and made a close connection with your mentor/supervisor/prof. That's the ideal, but if you don't have that, think back on your coursework. You want to find your research interests (to essentially do a dissertation on) and you want to answer the question of how CUNY's graduate program can help you do that. Look up the faculty on scholarly websites and read their writings, see if your interests and experiences line up. Have a very good reason why you want to go to graduate school and why you're willing to go through years of doing research and probably teaching as well despite little pay. These will all be part of your personal statement and what they will ask in interviews.

Try to get in contact with them (the profs) if you can when you apply and mention you're interested in conducting research under them for XYZ reason, though expect these to go unanswered. Finally, you might have to do some sort of diversity statement (and CUNY does care about that sort of thing because NYC) so think about how you could bring diversity to the program. This doesn't necessarily mean race, it could also include upbringing, interests and life experiences as well, so think about what makes you unique as a person and as an applicant, and what that could mean for your graduate studies.

Yeah I honestly had reservations about giving him that particular piece of advice for the reason you said, but he might have better luck since he's going for humanities, and from what I've seen the humanities profs (especially at progressive oriented places like mine) tend to be more open to students and people from outside asking about their research interests, as well as open in general. I guess you know as well as I do that the people on our side tend to be more stickler about that sort of thing, so it's always walking on eggshells with them.

There are a few professors that embody a particular conflux of my interests but I have been on the fence about contacting them before applying. Since you're an MA student, you can also leverage your advisor's personal connections, if they have any at the school. Maybe they know someone or know someone who knows someone who has an idea of who's "effectively retired" and so on. (Academics love work gossip, even if they claim they don't.)
