1) social distance
2) is it hard to say their last name
3) is it a jp or an en
4) do they have a long first or last name (or both)
5) do they have a nickname
and then finally
6) one sounds better than the other

This leaves aside the fact that some people are genuinely upset they didn't get to choose what their name is

Anon, most Indonesian doesn't have the concept of first and last names. It's interchangeable and you can call them by their first or last name.

Japanese used to be like that too but Emperor Meiji wanted to copy westerners by implementing last names.
