do the artists take incorporate characteristics from the streamer when designing the avatar? rushia and gura and other flat girls are always getting teased for being flat and sometimes they get angry or lament about it, but are they just playing it up for the performative aspect or are they actually flat irl?

Everybody from before Gen 4 auditioned for or was assigned their character, with the exception of Suisei who is her own designer. Everyone from Gen 4 onwards has at least some more say in what their character is like.

The former. There are a few of the roommates who physically match their characters pretty well though.

I think it's a case-by case scenario. With Gen 3, Pekora and Rushia were scouted beforehand, but in the case of Marine, Flare and Noel there were open auditions and silhouettes were released for the characters.

Polka is another good example of someone who was scouted beforehand and had a good amount of say in her character; she chose the clown motif because of her love of Hisoka.

During one of the Holomyth collab (I think it was the drawing one, but don't quote me on this), they joked about Gura pulling an Ame-debut since her hoodie technically could allow it, but then one of the girls mentioned the pre-début naked Gura incident, saying it wouldn't work because they know what's under the hoodie.
