Everything they do is tailored to attract as many whales as they can so that they can get money to spend with their actual irl partners.
There are few girls in Hololive that actually care and genuinely enjoy what they are doing, like Risu, but the whales would rather simp for people like pic related instead, just for the dopamine rush of being pandered for a minute.
It's generally better for indies, but since the concept of vtubers exploded in popularity since holoen became a thing, a lot of people jumped into the bandwagon hoping to cash in before the trend ends.

Personally I just feel like it's relevant to separate the talents that are trying to be entertaining just for the sake of doing their job from those who just start the stream and do what they would normally do by themselves, without pretending.
