I finally understand why people don’t like birthday call Ins.
The Gura Birthday stream being a clear example of everything that can be wrong.
Before the white knights ask me to take my meds. I will point out the main issues that make these types of streams a huge clusterf**k.

Yeah birthday streams in this fashion are very played out, it rarely leads to interesting conversations. The fact even Gura's sucked should tell folk it's time to stop relying on tradition and do something different for fun. Or if that's too hard just copy NijiEN where they get their whole branch (no exceptions) to show up to play multiplayer games together.

The whole point is too make members who don't interact together get out of their comfort zone. "Birthdays" are events and that's the only way you'll see stuff like Sora calling Gura despite not being able to speak english.

There are so many Hololive members nowadays that they can't communicate with everyone. Also give them some respect for calling in, even if it's their first time talking. It takes some courage to go out of their comfort zone.

This is an easy talking point to have when there's nothing else. It's better than talking about the weather or the color of the panties. Gura promised Coco that she would play ARK and she delivered, only half a year later. The collab promises are something similar, they will collab... eventually.

Pretty much this. The awkwardness is partially explained by members calling in half-asleep due to timezones and partially due to them interacting for the first time. A call-in stream is a great opportunity for that, because it gives them a pretense to interact (which can take the awkwardness out of just contacting someone "out of nowhere") and the viewers get to watch it too.
I don't see anything wrong with the pngs either. They're small practical gifts for the stream, it's cute.

It's basically roulette or gacha, most of the call ins are standard, but occasionally you get something really memorable.
