Papa had a weird buff of subscribers that didn't really reflect his views, I think it started around that first english slang learning stream, but even after settling, he was actually better off than before it. Then ofcourse depending on the game or subject, his average viewers either settle back to around 250 ~ 350. Which is still a better number than last year. Same, I consciously started watching kid's shows in english to practice and it worked. Look at me now, using my knowledge to post in a basket weaving internet imageboard. The issue with doing the same in japanese is that many words share a pronunciation and only by knowing the kanji you realize they are different. An example I know of is chopsticks and bridge.

Hardest part for me is understanding spoken Japanese. I've gotten good enough at reading it that I can go for most basic things, but I take too long to translate it in my head to catch the rest of the sentence when listening. It depends on the streamer. If we take son as an example, he speaks Kansai dialect although he try to limit himself half the stuff is still hard to understand even with basic Japanese skills. Plus he also talks pretty fast and loud.
I have a few oshi who speak simple Japanese cause the majority of their audience are EOP which helps to understand better than if they have a full blown conversation.
