This isn't entirely true. There used to be this thing called 'Gatekeeping'. Gatekeeping kept much more niche hobbies clean for decades.
Look at D&D, that's been around since the 70's, and it took until the mid-late 00's to get completely ruined by normalfags.

The difference between D&D is that it has so many DIY elements and stuff that only the real hardcore groups that treat the rules and prewritten race and etc. lore as gospel would ever really stick to the bullshit. Every netflix anime has been fucking garbage. Tokyo sinks was a globohomo trainwreck. Househusband was a powerpoint presentation. Almost half of their original series have been furry shit. More than half has been full cgi at 20fps. All of the godzilla movies were poorly directed tropefests that couldn't decide what they wanted to be. Next they'll be pulling whatever semi-coherent mess they can pull out of the nearest chinese garbage can and calling it anime. And don't forget the harm they do to the ecosystem at large through adjacent efforts; The culture-bent live action deathnote was one of the most obvious and most awful pandering efforts in history.
If netflix is touching vtubers, it's a huge clue that things are going to get worse fast. If you think there's a high volume low quality problem now, remember that feeling and reassess it in a year. For every Aggretsuko there will be half a dozen beaststars, ajins, aicos, and sword gais.

I really see this kind of thing struggling to ever take off. A key part of vtubers being successful is the same as with regular youtubers or streamers, at least presenting the facade of authenticity. Being a shill for a company worth billions from day 1 kind of runs entirely contrary to establishing that authenticity.

When you ask yourself what makes hundreds of thousands tune into big holo and niji events, or even just regular twitch streamers, it isn't anything to do with being a large company or aggressively spending money, its all about the personalities and the audiences connection to those personalities.
