Vegetables only is actually the WORST thing you can get from Subway. They were literally sued a few years ago because they get their stuff delivered in once a week only and food safety standards weren't being met.

A single person cooking for 3+ people will obviously be more cost effective than each individually eating fast food.
But if you live alone, then you're either gonna have a huge pile of leftovers, and left over ingredients. And consuming all of those before they go bad is not trivial, especially if you're not inclined to eat the same meal for 3 days in a row. Not all meals can be easily frozen and reheated.
Planning is a real challenge that shouldn't be ignored.

If you cook daily, then it's a little better cause you can use left over ingredients for other dishes, but people who eat take out daily won't switch from that to cooking every day.
Obviously no one should give up on preparing food for themselves completely but it's not as easy as some people make it out to be.

You are both right. Traditional bread only has four ingredients: water, flour, salt, and yeast. That kind of bread is pretty crispy and definitely not good for a sub, though, which is why if you were making the bread at home you’d add a little bit of olive oil.
Make a dough with not that much water compared to flour, and that’s your standard pizza dough. Add more water than that and shape it into a long, thin loaf, and that’s a baguette you can make subs with.
What we make in America is usually called “toast bread” in Europe. It’s good for sandwiches at best. They go to bakeries for what they call “real bread”.
