It always bothered me when Calliope had to make a fox sound and she chose to say "kon kon" and Gura had no idea what she was doing. Gura must not know a lot about Japan. It's worse because being in the same agency as Fubuki, she should have no excuse not to know what "kon kon" means, but I guess she doesn't care about her fellow Hololive members.

A moment that stuck in my mind was when for some reason gura started insulting shion in japanese in such a convincing way that even shion stopped laughing and tried to tell gura those were bad words to say. The following silence was awkward. It wasn't a big deal, but I'm super sensitive to that stuff for some reason, and I cringed so hard I closed the stream.

The silence you mentioned was just Shion trying to use deepl to translate her response into English, and Shion only said "where did you learn such dirty language?" (the app translator mistranslated it into "slander" but you get the point) because she was surprised that Gura knew Japanese insults. I was watching someone from HoloJP doing a zatsudan stream 2 years ago. She was talking to her chat about foreigners (this was back when Hololive exploded in popularity due to covid) and how many there were in her chat. Yes, and one should be a person of their word. But it's also 'not her job' as in she's not a professional translator. She's Indonesian, JSL, E3L iirc. She can't translate that fast. Gura should have had multiple people helping her, like Iofi, Risu, and Kiara or something.

Let me elaborate, I don't exonerate Iofi from her actions, but the way that it was handled, especially by the fans, was just the absolute worst. Gura was wronged, but that should have stayed between Gura and Iofi. Instead the chumbuds shit all over everyone. Gura didn't have the temerity to pull them back, and if Iofi tried it'd only been worse. So he had to bear that, and she didn't involve anyone else, so she bore it alone. It was rough and uncalled for. After that ID management with urging from ID fans told the girls to stream in English less so the EN fans would piss off, and Gura outright refused collabs and that even extended to cutting down intra-gen collabs. She was a solo act for almost a solid two months. It was handed poorly all around and it still kinda sticks with me because I still don't like chumbuds.

I rewatched the switch sports moment and I have to admit it wasn't as bad as I remembered it (I did write that it wasn't a big deal) but I cringe very easily anyway, another example is the mario kart stream with nacho where I cringed really hard and had to close the stream too even though it was cute. And yes I might have some kind of mental issue that causes me to cringe way too much, no idea what it might be though because there is no mental illness that has "cringes a lot" as a symptom.

While Takamori was shit it was a bit more complex than that because much of the trouble was due to dense people misunderstanding. Both sides were playing a character but neither very well. Calliope was playing a tsundere since the joke was meant to be “haha a Phoenix is immortal so Death won’t be with them.”
Calliope was bad at it and likely actually disinterested but it made people read more into the tsundere cliche than was really there. On the other hand there was Kiara who was also not great but tries to make up for it through hard work and pushing as hard as she can in a way that comes off as too strong and unnatural (same story as many Kiara troubles there).
Both fan bases end up annoyed and treat things seriously making things worse and worse.

Gura starting to "be herself" on her first birthday stream.
Even as soon as she said it, I knew what she meant. She was going to be less seiso, start swearing, stream less, etc and lo and behold I was proven right.
What really bothered me is everyone was doing the usual "yas queen slay, do whatever you want!" shtick and I was just there thinking to myself, "I don't want this. I came to vtubing precisely so I can watch an idealized performance and fake relationship, not the usual twitch hedonism". It also bothered me that she was almost guilt tripping me by saying that the kind of content I enjoyed was in some way bad or worse.
But of course I was drowned out, and apparently the minority, even /here/. After that, I began to watch less and less, and drifted away from Hololive.

Looking back, it was the best decision I ever made, seeing how it all turned out, but I really, really wish things could have been different. Alas.

I can admit that I was one of the people thinking Kiara was forcing a ship. Trying to make Takamori the OkaKoro of EN. No two of the others work the same way. They didn't give the detective a fugitive*, and nothing else is even in theory a counterpart to a shark or an eldritch being, in the same way as "immortal reincarnating being" plays off "incarnation of death itself".
