Each HoloEN has one defining color, the color is bright, showy and recognizable. Each one has a very straightforward theme - A detective, a grim reaper, a lovecraft tribute. Recognizable at first glance, easy to remember, they look cohesive like they belong together but still very much differ from each other that we won't get them confused. These are all things the NijiENs are kinda lacking.
I'm only layman though, also not trying to be tribalist I swear.

It's the characters they portray rather than the designs imo. Dragon-chan looks badass. Fairy and mermaid are tropes we've seen a million times over and tends be bland innocent-seiso-ness without room for development.

You're right. Going by this picture >>3638924 alone, though, the fairy's wings - the one thing that says out loud 'SHE'S A FAIRY' - is obscured by the dragon in front of her.
The mermaid comes off as an aquatic folk, but it's not fully committed, a full on bottom-half fish would definitely pin her as a mermaid, but alas. The crown on her head is too humble - is she suppose to be royalty? Luna is definitely 100% a princess, but with mermaid you can't tell.
Lastly, nothing about the middle says she's a dragon, you have to read up on her to know it. That's a failure of design. Big hands are interesting, though.

Honestly I think it's just the color selection. They all have blue-green as a primary color and the background is also predominantly blue-green which gives the entire picture a sort of samey feel to it. They also all have the same body type which makes them blend together more.

Their similarities and blue oriented color palette has me speculating that they have more in store. Like, a red/fire themed male batch would make a great contrast. This isn't what an artist would draw if they were given free reign over the subject.

If Elira is who I think she is then she's better than Gura on average but not as good as Gura on her good days. She's certainly good enough to be an utaite though.
