There was some diffusion back then though. I remember seeing a pretty large crowd of people wearing anonymous/fawkes masks and doing a Project Chanology protest on my uni campus. That was kinda a wild experience, since you'd never imagine a Liberal university organizing a 4chan-based event nowadays.
