There are some over the counter things that actually-fucking-work as anxiolytics/antidepressants (SSRI class), specifically St John's Wort. Even though it sounds like something you'd use in an Elder Scrolls alchemy recipe it actually is medically active and prescribed for low/moderate symptoms in some countries (germany IIRC), if he can just go buy some of that as a tea or tincture it could be worth a shot. Well, that plus valerian plus passionflower plus lemon balm.. he'd have to find some kind of specialty store or something but I mean if he cannot refill his actual prescriptions, those things DO work. they may just take like, a lot at first. For me they barely worked at first and I had to drink like 8 cups of st john's tea a day or the palpitations/tingles/chest pains would come back, but after a couple weeks those things actually-fucking-worked at curing me. Over the last like 8 years there've been only two brief recurrences during super-stressful times for me and both times those things fixed it again within a week.

ADHD meds are illegal in japan but there are no anxiety meds that are banned unless he's on Ativan or some shit but that would be obvious, they make you sound high. As someone who's had panic attacks so severe I fainted from oxygen loss and moved on to taking seizure meds for bad episodes - it really is nothing. It is made up fear, especially whatever I'm getting from this thread. Your brain is tricking you and you can trick it right back. There are skills to learn to push through an attack, breathing exercises, supplements, DBT practice (no need for a therapist unless you're truly alone and need someone to guide you, I did have one) vagus nerve movement, exercise. You CAN manage anxiety, it's not fucking life threatening. Hiding and drinking and isolating exacerbates it. Depression maks you think it's impossible to do anything becayse of panic attacks. Sometimes you seriously have to push through the panic and ask for help, like surely he can call someone and they'll let him get meds at an ER temporarily. Japan hands out IVs like candy in hospitals. Is he on a work visa?
