Your first mistake is to try and pronounce R when you have your tongue in place for an L. You will never roll your Rs if you pronounce like "Ar".

Remove the "a" from the "ar". Now just push air through your tongue while keeping it in the form of the L.

Practice with the word "drat" by trying to roll your R.

You CAN roll the Japanese R, but it's not the default or a distinct sound. In other words, you can roll them in the same way you can roll Rs in English It's not obligatory like in Spanish or something and plenty of Japanese native speakers can't roll theirs.
That said, if you can do the Japanese tap R that's a better starting point for rolling your Rs than English's weird R sound.
