Fig, how do you deal with lag? Like really, really bad lag. Like inputs don’t happen for 5 frames, if they don’t get eaten by a frame skip or freeze. Like rollback happens so frequently that your opponent’s burst radius is 4 times bigger than it would be in person. Like rollbacks sometimes take away hits that you earned and saw play out, only to put you in a horrible position because you couldn’t react to the miss that you didn’t see.

1. The freedom of movement. I’m not even talking advanced techniques like moonwalks, wavedashing, etc. If you can get past the clunky input system (no buffer, extremely dated lockouts, et cetera), you can move around with such insane amounts of freedom that no future smash game (or 64) has been able to replicate (and seem to actively fight against). Just the fact that you can edge cancel attacks and transfer your grounded momentum into your jump is such a breath of fresh air compared to ult’s stiffness
2. Interesting movesets. Say what you will about its balance, the fighters are extremely unique in this one, which is something ult doesn’t really get (everyone feels basically the same in ult, it’s just whatever bullshit jank you have that distinguishes them). Even taking away some of the weird stuff each character has, you’d be hard pressed to say that even the clones feel the same, aside from Doc and Mario, which legit do feel the same. Everyone feels so unique to control and fight with. Is that always a good thing? No some of them suck ass. But it’s interesting and makes your character choice feel significant besides “what flavor of ass pull do I want this match?”
3. Brainrot. Ok I’ll admit there’s some serious melee brainrot that makes it hard to adapt to other games once you’re used to it, but it really does feel so good that other platform fighters don’t make any sense after. Even with their improvements it’s hard not to say “ok but melee did it better,” “ok but melee feels better,” “ok but melee has this and this game doesn’t.” There’s a reason it’s still active after 20 years

That being said there is a LOT of room for improvement. I mentioned weird control jank and lockouts, and that’s barely scratching the surface. You can’t buffer anything at all save for a jump, but only with the stick flick, and occasionally you’ll feel like you buffer an aerial attack if you get pushed off a ledge while trying to jab or tilt. Also the defensive game is atrociously bad aside from unintentional weird techniques. And there’s just so much bullshit that could use cleaning up.
Which is why my main goal with my chuuba game is to fix it. I wanna make melee but fixed and better, and also with cool characters like the fishe
