I'm thinking about the possible ways the blonde population's culture could be with them revering Aki, Choco and Mel as their goddesses. Kapu-min could also be actors who take pleasure in reenacting stories in theater plays, once again playing on the tourism idea. People would come from far and wide to see Kapu-min and Rosetai perform, indulge in the Chocomates' brothels, and taste the food of the region, at their risk and perils if they enter a Kapu-min restaurant

So while Ive been deving this little pvp rts mini game Ive been taking a ton of "inspiration" from FFXIV.
Does feel a little weird sometimes though, because whenever Im coming up with systems or in this latest case, UI, Im just straight up copying design choices. And I feel a little bad? but I keep telling myself theres no need to reinvent the wheel (theres only so many ways you can show a cooldown or a button, right?)

This certainly has to come up with regular writing or story telling though. you read some story or watch some show or movie and think "wow, thatd be cool to have in my chuuba nation"
How do you all reconcile with the feeling that youre "stealing" an idea? Or am I overthinking it way too much and no one else really cares about this?

I get what you mean, but personally I got over that a whole back. I think the nuance is that most of the time when you adapt an idea to your own project there is a fair amount of re-interpretation; whether you want to or not, you're going to put your own spin on it, unless you're specifically going for a photographic replication.
It's also pretty freeing to look into what inspired the ones who inspired you, and realizing they also lifted damn near all their ideas from others as well. All we do is built on the shoulders of giants. my chuuba nation is full of stuff I grabbed from movies novels and anime kek.

This is actually a really interesting take on it.
From a programmer perspective, its (usually) really easy to see what dependencies different libraries have, or see what pre-established algorithms were used, but for more meta ideas that sort of stuff isnt always readily apparent. Thanks anon

I think this phenomenon is even more apparent in game design. Consider a very fundamental gameplay component: controlling the player's camera with a controller. For a chunk of gaming history, all sorts of things were attempted: using a button to realign the camera to the player character, dedicated buttons to shift the camera right and left, locking the camera to the player object orientation, locking the camera to specific points in the scene. It was all different sorts of jank and unwieldy, which is apparent if you go back to those games today.
Then, one game thought "hmm, there's this other stick on the Dualshock, what if we just...", and Alien Resurrection tried to have the right stick control the camera. Game journalists called the choice "terrifying", but gaming history was changed and most games use this clearly more instinctive game design today. The whole medium is built on small breakthroughs and realizations like that, that others can build their own findings on. Same goes for something like your cooldown UI; FFXIV picked up that system from something else, maybe adding some of their own improvements (maybe not, MMO UI has been relatively stagnant for the past decade, but I don't remember anything of the little FFXIV I played).

GUI is one of those things where you gotta be careful about deviations from the norm, really wanna make sure changes bring improvements instead of just adding uniqueness, since that's how you end up with a subpar interface. These days games tend distinguish themselves with stuff besides UI, since that field is such well-tread ground.

Good question! All solar flares have the same kinda output, they just differ (a lot) in their intensity. Basically the first thing the planet feels during a solar flare’s the strong EM wave emitted by the star. It covers pretty much the entire spectrum but the most dangerous part’s the UV and X-ray since they’re ionizing enough to kill and gets emitted in sufficient quantity. Anything left under the sun when the flare reaches its peak (~20 seconds after it starts) will get a nasty sunburn at best or paralysis and death at worst, but the most damaging part’s the sheer amount of energy the light dumps into the atmosphere. Depending on the strength of the flare it can range from making the hemisphere tropical for hours to setting everything flammable on fire like an industrial oven. The heat isn’t really something that can be shielded from (without technology) since it’s sheer thermal energy at work. The energy dumped into the atmosphere will eventually dissipate as the planet returns to equilibrium (up to a few weeks for superflares, which are the strongest solar flares Despina experience on a regular level once every few centuries or millennium) in the form of global storms
A minute or so later the solar wind will hit Despina. Since the planet’s tidally locked it doesn’t have a strong enough magnetosphere to withstand most flares. Huge, brilliant aurora dance all over the sky, unshielded electronics get fried, and the sky can turn pink as nitrogen and oxygen fuse during superflares, but otherwise those aren’t very damaging compared to the thermal wave that hit the planet immediately beforehand

On the face of it, the Laplace Demon seems implied to be a universe destroyer, so she'd have the advantage. But full horny Rissa has mind-altering powers, so if the Laplace Demon can be affected by that Rissa could potentially take it. The outcome depends on that I'd say.

I like that you specify its role in ecological succession, I guess it would be even more important in ecosystems where "resets" are so reliable, and it also shows how important the species is. Also makes use of its deep roots to explain how it might have better odds of surviving. It's also cool you've got some subspecies going with the moonwort and sunwort. You mentioned the moonwort glows in the dark, what sorts of properties would the sunwort have? Extra resistance to the flares?
The fact some species not only exploit, but have even weaponized the flares is also cool as hell, really gives the environment this dangerous feeling. Good stuff as always.

Originally the lack of dreamwort in space /vnug/’s meant to be part of the tragedy but since I’m detaching it from the main setting I guess there’s no longer a reason to not have dreamwort in the space setting. The fire thing’s inspired by something I read once about some trees in Australia (because of course) making use of bushfire as part of its life cycle, so I decided that some dreamworts also do that now. It’s interesting but I’m mostly fascinated by the imagery. If you live near dreamwort meadows (which is most places on Despina outside the glacier and desert) and you poke your head out of the bunker following a solar flare, you might be able to see the air filled with burning sparks of dreamwort leaves and droplets being blown across the city, carrying new seeds and bulbils (assuming they’re light enough to fly… maybe they have evolved structures to fly like dandelion seeds?) to repopulate the wasteland with new life. I guess for Despina, fire doesn’t just mean death but also life and rebirth after all
I haven’t decided on the properties of individual dreamwort species but I imagine moonworts glow because they’re more chuubanitic than other dreamwort species (as they’re the only plants that can grow on the nightside tundra caused by ocean currents) and the light also help attract pollinators. Nowadays they’re bred to glow brighter and in prettier colors for decorative purposes. As for the sunwort they’re probably extra resilient to both drought and flares because they live in the cloudless desert (Welwitschia taproot can apparently survive for centuries in the Namib desert). I think they’ll have even longer taproot to absorb water from deep underground and their bulb’s juicy enough to sustain people. You can also probably make some good root beers from them too

Neat, wildfires as part of flora life cycles is actually pretty common, if I recall correctly, there are some conifers where the bulb containing the bulb is designed to explode when it is near the heat of a fire, spreading the seeds, as the time following a forest fire is ideal to plant the seeds, since there's a lot of nutritious ash and the canopy cover blocking the sun light is gone.
