I can have (what I think is) an understanding of each word in a given sentence and how it flows but I have to consciously think about it in a language I already know to understand the message but some concepts it feels like I'll never get because they don't have easy to understand equivalent.

This is semi-valid concern in general and probably common, so I'll try to respond seriously.
(I'm assuming protecting smiles is synonym for wanting to make people happy.)
1. "They just want to have fun fulfilling their dreams" (wanting to be idols basically). Yes, and they've mentioned this many times. But why do you become an idol? Probably A. to be loved, and B. to give your audience what they want, such as protecting their smiles (an idol can't exist without fans). Wanting to be loved you could call selfish, but is it really fair? Everyone wants to be loved. Also, Fuwamoco have been the most aware, considerate and wish-fulfilling towards their fans compared to any vtuber I've ever seen, so this criticism doesn't really land in comparison to other vtubers.
2. Your argument seems to hang on the idea that people are never genuine and only do things for selfish ends. I'm sorry for what you've experienced thus far but this just isn't true. Or maybe you are stuck with the philosophical paradox, where every action can be traced back to self-fulfillment, even if it's about helping others.
5. Maybe you are concerned about them getting paid? Well, whenever money is in the equation, you can't definitely know if someone is doing their job because for the money or for genuine passion, so you'll have to use your intuition. To me it looks like they have lots of passion. You also need to consider that to do this full time, money is a requirement. And they are not asking for money, they are relying on voluntary donations.
3. "would rather do things their way". Even if Fuwamoco do their best at making you happy, they can only do so their own unique way, and even take a bit of pride in it. It seems like you have a very specific image and wishes in your mind, and are disappointed in that Fuwamoco isn't exactly 1:1 to that. Even if they wanted to sacrifice every last bit of individuality and surrender to their fans desires (which isn't exactly healthy), it's still not realistic for them to be tailored to specifically your needs. They are dogs, not gods.
4. "they're not helping". True in a way. Fuwamoco are there for your company and enjoyment, but in the end, nobody else can save you, only you can help yourself, and therefore every claim of "helping" someone is technically false.

I don't know much about actual Japanese idol culture, and what I do know comes from anime/manga/vidya deconstructions, so the entire industry kinda makes me want to vomit. But just because I hate the game doesn't me I need to hate the players too.
