These problems are not exclusive to the vtubing scene lmao.
Before this, these same "problems" were leveled at e-girl streamers, primarily on twitch. Going further back, you can trace these "kayfabe vs reality" issues all the way back to fucking Boxy.
Even pre-internet, hardcore wrestling fans would get up in arms over wrestlers who weren't acting "on brand" or would even show the barest hints of reality.
Vtubers lie in this sort of grey area where they're not expected to become new personas like Broadway actors, otherwise we'd have a lot of chuuni shit like girls seriously pretending to be detectives and forest spirits (kino), but they can't be too real either because that would be too intimidating.
Instead they sort of have to balance the best of both worlds, playing aspects of their character up while still letting their real self shine through the cracks. I believe Fauna acted from within these appropriate parameters when she caused this "controversy".

When it comes to the meltdown thing, it was basically a butterfly effect by it exacerbating itself from extremists on both sides egging each other on more and more to become more radical. It definitely got too much discussion in relation to what it actually is.
