Normies moved from the fad at least 1-2 years ago. Also, I think something that curses vtubers who make it big is collabbing with non-vtubers. They all seem to dip pretty big once they start collabbing with the usual twitch grifters, and avoiding them is the whole reason many watch vtubers in the first place.

I don't think much changed. The number of fans can change much faster than new streamers can appear, so everyone back then was pushed up with the increasing audience.
Now total viewers are relatively constant and you only see the natural rise and fall of individual streames.
