I could not disagree harder. As a music graduate and musician especially, western pop all sounds like absolute garbage to me. At least j-pop has some nice instrument use going on within it a bunch of the time or some distinct changes, if you like western pop idk man.
Rap sounds bad because rap is flat out bad, even if calli was some famous ghetto jogger considered the 'peak' of rap, it would still sound shit. Rap has very little musical talent or creativity in meter, timing or composition involved in it 99% of the time.
And whilst anime music does have some metal etc in it, my meaning is that cover are never gonna go for that in a million years - not with an actual talent they're pushing as a singer. They'd let some of their talent do it in karaoke and to fuck around sure but they'd never actually back them in making/putting out that kind of music cause they're one track minds on what they want.

Diamond City Lights makes me realise how much Niji mogs Cover. Song is decently mixed, uses the voices of the three talents well (as you'd hope from an idol song) and the video is of a high enough quality to feel professional.

It'll still filter a mainstream audience because the song itself is written with Japanese sensibilities in mind and is very anime-esque but it's definitely closer to the kind of launch push Cover should have tried for with V-Singer.

I'll get mogged for saying this despite being a paid up Teamate but Niji are done down by a lack of name recognition rather than bad business sense.

There's a small idol group named RAY that had a song produced for them by the American shoegaze band Ringo Deathstarr. Another small group, Oyasumi Hologram, got the guitarist from Bloc Party to play guitar on a few of their songs and even play as part of one of their lives.

If relative no name groups like those, whose MVs top out in the low tens of thousands at the very best, can do it then Cover should have zero issue. There's plenty of lyricists who would probably love the opportunity to work on songs with the English talent but Cover being Cover they're going to take the lazy route instead.

Bro, my favorite idol group maxes out at about 10-12k MV views and they somehow managed to get Mariko Goto from Midori and the lead singer of BEAT CRUSADERS to write songs for the same EP. If a self-managed group with little to no budget can manage getting names like that then Cover can find one of the endless number of producers to write and make songs for them. Finding English lyricists shouldn't be hard at all either.

You are missing the point. She is a famous utaite. She loves singing JP songs and wants to have her own JP song. She sounds great singing them. And it's not as if it's full JP. There are full sentences of English there. As far as I can tell, they making sure she gets both JP and EN on board without alienating anyone. Her major sales will still be in JP. Deals with music stores will still be local. They are probably aiming for her to reach the same popularity as Suisei. Suisei's EP btw is still in the Top Ten charts. It's her 2nd day there.

Just listened to the full versions of the songs in the EP
It's true that they do sound like anime OPs, but each one would definitely be a top tier OP. If that was their aim, then their choice in composers was good
As for her performance, it was about as good as any other professional in the industry

I think the only sections that really shot out to me was the bridge in diorama and the Yuyoyuppe drops in the Caesura of Despair Attacca version
At least it lends well to background listening while working
