The problem is, there's no incentive for a northernlion-type streamer to join holostars. Males generally don't get popular for their appearance, so those guys can just stream with facecam rather than give cover X% of their income and have to deal with permissions. This creates a selection pressure where the only people left wanting to join holostars are guys who are attached to the brand (a small recruiting pool) and guys who want to use holostars as a way to interact with hololive girls.

Looking back, the first gen wasn't that bad. They weren't top-tier by any means, but one could argue that they were entertaining and had their own charm. and then the two better members decided to fuck off

I don't think it will change their situation. The thing is, it's pretty crazy, but Holostars is actually the first ever all-male vtuber group that ever created, perhaps even in the world, and also in the period where Hololive already cemented themselves as the #2 corpo in the industry back then.

And even if with that first mover buff they couldn't secure a respectable amount of popularity for themselves then I don't think anything could.
Then again you could argue that the shitshow around their creation hampered their reputation too, but we can also argue that it come from the market that wouldn't watch them in the first place, so it shouldn't matter much down the line.

The easiest way to put them in the spotlight is to let them collab with the girls, and not just any girls, the girls who don't usually collab with men. Because you know, Kuzuha got huge because he collabed with Mito and Himawari, Luxiem got huge because they collabed with Lazusydia. For the Holostars, on the JP side would be collabing with Miko/Marine/Pekora, on EN it would be Gura/Fauna/FWMC. Collabing with the usual suspects or worse, the fucking indogs, is useless, no one would watch that.

Bettel's naming gimmick is lifted right from Vinny. Though funny enough, it was NijiID (when they were healthy) that was CONSTANTLY referencing Vinesauce. He's been around long enough to be an inspiration for a ton of vtubers including Holos, men and women.
As for Oneyplays, I've gotten some vibes of that from full Armis collabs. There were a few times in particular that made me think of the "every time it's 8!" argument between Chris and Ding Dong. Though I'd probably compare them more to the Lythero group than Oneyplays (fitting since GB is friends with Alfred).
Funny enough, the only vtuber I've heard directly reference Oneyplays and Sleepycabin is Mysta.
