As for the lore, it shoots shuttles long distances without needing fuel. However that means the planet much be pointing on the right location the moment you activate the gravity cannon.
As for the game itself nothing much, it's just a bunch of lore inside the ship when you warp them back and outside the ship where they were originally (like in the comet if you remember)
