Then either reduce the number of wordcount-based categories from the start until the risk is sufficiently mitigated, or set them up to be dynamic based on the number of submissions (like joining two adjacent categories if they have too few submissions, or just deleting them).
Though I think that the format in which the results are presented (with stats rather than simple placements) and the fact that the only thing you win is glory already makes it so "winning" isn't the same thing across categories. Winning a category with 3 entries is obviously less impressive than winning a category with 20 entries, and people reacting to the results will take that into account. There's no award ceremony that treats all the winners as equals.

>The categories I'm not so sure on. In the first contest, the SFW/NSFW split to me, felt a bit too narrow. NSFW has the problem however of being equated so smut so votes go out to "which did you find the hottest. For SFW, maybe we should consider what that one Anon said and do awards like "fic that made you laugh"
I don't like the SFW/NSFW split for contests either. It's useful for splitting the fics in two categories in the archive, but when the fics compete with each other it favours those that fit the expectations associated with the tags. SFW is essentially "which story touched your heart the hardest?" and NSFW is "which story made your dick the hardest?". Which aren't necessarily bad categories, but they should be named as such and accompanied by others.

I think the problem remains and at that point, you're just splitting hairs. Like I appreciate the ambitions but let's be real guys, there are like 50 IPs in the last thread, we are not the Pulitzer. Let's keep things reasonable and achievable. Yes, a word count is limiting, that's the entire point. You only have a month to come up with an idea, outline it, write it, and edit it. Are you really going to waste time writing a ton or are you going to maybe change your mindset and set your goals according to the rules? Save your opus for later.

Now we could just be barking up the wrong tree and the problem was timing and not word count but I think having one is important, we can reduce it to 15k or keep it 25k.

>>66762424
>Then either reduce the number of wordcount-based categories from the start until the risk is sufficiently mitigated, or set them up to be dynamic based on the number of submissions
At that point there should just be either no word count at all or a strict limit. That just makes more busy work for the organizer IMO.

>At that point there should just be either no word count at all or a strict limit. That just makes more busy work for the organizer IMO.
The latest contest benefitted a lot from the introduction of the under 5k category - it motivated multiple writers, including me. Investing work into expanding on that idea seems the most worth it, if anything! And neither you nor me can speak for the eventual organizer, who ultimately has to decide things. It's not our place to put limits or obligations on them months before the contest even starts.

Okay. How about this compromise.
We go with broad over-categories that every fic is enrolled in automatically with the categories broadly corresponding to tags like NSFW, SFW, comedy, fluff, etc by way of being worded as
"What made my dick the hardest", "What made you laugh", "What touched my heart", etc.
Then have a tier system based on word count. Starting with an anything goes, all the way to microfiction.
Then we have a contest where this proves hilariously overcomplicated to actually run for the contest runner. Afterwards we have another 'fix the contest' discussion and finally converge on a simpler system.

You can submit any previously unpublished story. It doesn't have to be written entirely within the contest period.
And if you want to impose limits make it a soft limit by not having special categories for longer stories. A hard limit that just disqualifies stories because too much effort was put into them seems awful cost/benefit wise.

That sounds less complicated for the contest runner. A lot of the work and a source of issues is sorting the stories by tags and putting them into the right categories.

To give my two cents, I think we can keep playing around with the contest rules until we find the right formula. After organising the first one and witnessing how the second one went down, I think next we should try the idea that some of the other anons have been suggesting like >>66763089 -- all stories are submitted to the same voting pool and different "prizes" are chosen as the voting criteria.

So before the contest starts the thread can decide on which prizes are available to the contest entries, like the example below:
>Best comedy
>Best (hottest) smut
>Best narrative
>Best characters
>Best ...
>Best ...
And so on. Then the writers can go wild, writing whatever the fuck they want and dumping it onto the contest anchor. Once the submission period is over the voters will come together and vote for which stories they think deserve each prize out of the entire entry pool.

As for the word limit issue, I always prefer giving more freedom to the writers. If we wanted to add a wordcount aspect we could have three or four categories at the end of the poll that DON'T contain all of the submitted stories, but rather the stories that fall within each individual wordcount limit, like:
>Best 0-1000 word fic
>Best 1001-5000 word fic
>Best 5001-10000 word fic
>Best 10001+ word fic
With each question only allowing you to select the relevant stories of each wordcount category.

For a contest like this, however, we'd need a shitload of stories to ensure one story doesn't end up taking like 90% of the prizes. To provide for this I say we let the thread recharge for a while and make contests less frequent, while also increasing the contest submission period to two months. With a length like that it can just be something hovering in the background should somebody have a story they wish to submit.
I'd like to hear everyone's opinions, though. It's just an outline of an idea and feels incomplete.

I mean if you're seriously considering it as a way to simplify it for the contest runner. Maybe an easier way to dynamically do the word count categories without being complicated is to have word counts be self reported by each author when they post their fic. That way you'll have stories of similar length facing each other for a best in length as like a side category beside the main over categories.

I think something like this system could work as a better foundation for a contest system. Also yeah, I think this needs more time for everyone to recharge their creative batteries if this is another competition rather than a disguised shill campaign like our first one intended to be.
Also
>Best narrative
This category name just makes me imagine some anon posting their rrat in thread and linking it to the contest post.

>> No.66764181

>>66763844
Just my 2 cents, but I wouldn't be too worried about one story winning too much too easily - there's no fixed prize, like a trophy that would be the same regardless of how hard the competition was; how meaningful winning ends up being scales with the number of entries as I outlined in >>66762424. But I don't have anything against 2 months of submission period anyway.
I'd also delete the highest wordcount category, the one that allows any fics above a certain length. It's clear that some want a wordcount limit and telling writers to limit their scope creep if they want to compete in a wordcount category is a good compromise.

My ideas for categories (not necessarily their precise names) would be
>Funniest
>Hottest
>Most Touching
>Most Creative

Hottest is basically what NSFW used to be, Most Touching is basically what SFW used to be. Funniest works well as a broad category because almost every fic includes at least some humour, Most Creative leaves room for everything outside of the standard styles and plots, and Best Vtuber Characters pays hommage to what this community is about. And of course there could be 1 or 2 additional ones that I didn't think of.

I think an annual contest is fine in terms of frequency. People will always have other WIPs anyway and as you said need time to recharge.
>Separate category for best rrat
Brilliant.

>>66764181
You make a good point about the wordcount limit, but if we do delete the infinite length category then I'd at least like to raise the roof above 10k words. Adding onto this though, I guess setting a word count limit would level the playing field some more when it comes to different length fics competing for one of the prizes. Longer stories are generally going to have more plot elements and better character moments, making it easier for them to score prizes like "best characters" and stuff. By adding a maximum word count it allows shorter stories to stand a chance at taking some of those prizes since it won't be a 5k word story squaring up against a 50k word monolith.

>>66764547
This is going to be the easiest aspect of the contest to brainstorm, and I like what you have. Depending on how many stories we get we could actually change how many prizes are available throughout the submission period like that other anon mentioned.

Longer stories take more effort to write and are naturally better for the reason you explained, not by some trick or quirk - so them having an advantage (and not an insurmountable one, I'd argue) doesn't have to be seen as an issue. It also might be balanced out by the likelihood that fewer of the voters will read the longer stories (attentively). And in line with the previous arguments about not every placement being the same, a 4k words fic coming 2nd in "Best character" can be considered as, or even more, impressive than the 60k words fic that got the 1st place.

Funnily enough I think this might be the one flaw in the proposed new contest rules for categories being discussed since the overall categories are an "out of everything what did you think was X" situation. You can't exactly do a partial vote and abstain in what you're competing on if every fic is part of every category... I agree with you, but I have to ask: Did it motivate you because you found it to be a good challenge to tackle or because it was an achievable goal? Or something else?

I'm aware, what I meant was that those stuck in WIP hell are going to continue to be stuck in WIP hell regardless of the contest. Plenty of authors didn't get an entry out in time the first go around and the time limit didnt light a fire under their ass. Another limit isn't going to reduce the benefit because the benefit wasn't there to begin with. Either they enter or they don't and publish later. The Under 5k category made it so that fics which didn't take very long to write still had a good shot at achieving a high placement in a category. I thought that if you wanted to do well in the SFW or NSFW categories you had to commit to a long fic.

You and Mio are childhood friends and Ayame is that one "unknown friend" you don't know about that Mio met when she and you lose contact with eachother.

Is that a good enough scenario? You and Mio meet again as adults but whenever the two of you try and get intimate Ayame would "suddenly" pop out of thin air and ruin the mood. She would then take a liking to you and Mio isn't "strong willed" to stop her (Ayame) from flirting (or getting REALLY chummy) with you.

To be clear: The Under 5k category had that effect. A contest wide word limit wouldn't have, because then there'd be all the more dedicated authors to compete with.
The key is having a category that seems easy to compete in, because the chief barrier to entering contests (or writing in general) is being afraid of investing too much effort for what you get out of it.

So this time the flashback scene worked a little more nicely, but it reads a little flat. Like the shift from talking about how her changed biology is negatively impacting her, to how her own gift is uncontrollable and threatening to herself was a little too radical. There was not a lot of build up to what could be interesting magical experimentation, and it just kinda abruptly ends. I suppose it offers a good contrast for how she eventually gains practiced control over it enough to help with a rather creative solution in the next scene.
For the meat of this plotline itself, I feel like it was anticlimactic. The sudden removal of one of its primary antagonistic actors kinda robs the story of that awaited confrontation. I can't help but feel like there might have been another part of two for this, since we go from an initial faceoff, to kinda putting the pieces together almost from nothing. The "solution" is also pretty jarring from what we've seen from the characters so far, and feels like using dynamite to pull a nail from a board. Sorry if this feels harsh, but seeing the second team's plotline come to such a swift ending kinda took the payoff away from it.
Some suggestions around the prose itself, try not to use a phrase like "5 AM" to describe the early morning. The exact position on the sun dial is a little less important in a fantasy driven world than the color and shifting hues of the skyline. Your world wants to be mystical and pretty, even in times where bleakness and uncertainty slowly spread within it. Let yourself make it pretty.
Scene descriptors had a little more effort put into them like you set out for, so nice going there.
I'll be curious what becomes of the dogs at some point, though it's probably not a happy end.

>> No.66810615

>>66809816
>So this time the flashback scene worked a little more nicely, but it reads a little flat.

I actually had the same thought when I reread it a few times and I think I have the solution for it. I'm going to do a fun little training montage for Watame to show how she got more fine control over her abilities but also make it a bit more humorous. I think I need to resist the urge to make it sad. When I think about it, there's a lot of ways I can inject humor into Watame figuring out her ability.

>Sorry if this feels harsh,

It doesn't and I agree. I genuinely don't know what it was but I have been stumped on this plot segment since before christmas. It's why last chapter didn't have it lol. It was anti-climatic but for some reason I just couldn't figure out how to make it work a bit better. I'm sorry it landed so poor. This isn't quite the end of that plot though so hopefully in the future it can get some of the magic that it missed. What I am glad to hear is that you found the buildup interesting because honest to god I thought that was lacking too lol

>Let yourself make it pretty.

It's funny but that's genuinely helpful advice. Writing things that are more chipper and pretty is something I'm not really used too since my bread and butter has always been tragedy. It sounds really silly to say it, but that actually helped more than you think lol.

>I'll be curious what becomes of the dogs

It'll be tough but I'm not going to rake them over the coals. What I learned with Civia is that sometimes its fine to dial back the "suffering build's character." Ayame, Tamaki and the dogs are going to have their own tight knit plot together. I'm going to take your lead and not just put them through hell the entire book lol.

Thank you for the critique and I am sorry that plot sorta fell flat. I genuinely don't know why I couldn't get the gears greased for it.

Thanks for taking the feedback in stride. In regards to the plot not coming out quite like you wanted, since you are writing multiple plotlines at once, you have the advantage of spending however much time you want on ones that feel more right while you try to figure out ones that are giving you trouble. I would easily let opt for taking the time to figure out the right ingredients for your cooking over settling for something that is half baked when it doesn't necessarily have to be the next thing you write. Sometimes when you write/outline something else, it helps you find answers to the questions you might have about something else.
Something else that might help to think about if you are hitting blocks with your conflicts and their resolutions, is to think about the characters involved, and the world state. What needs to happen to get things to their eventual next state? How will the current conflict be a step towards that? Who will change? What do they learn/do? What are the consequences of the resolution itself? Those types of questions can help guide you towards how the story is meant to play out.
I also think if you let yourself get more chipper, it can make your tragedies hit a little harder. Keep on improving.

How about making the next one in vaguely the same place as the first writing rumble. By which I mean have it end around 8/25, with the start date being based on how long we're going for a submission/writing period. So if we do the two months period we'd start in late June if we keep the one month submission period we'd start in late July. Meanwhile if we do another winter rumble we should probably move the ending period to January and have the submission period be from November/December.
As for who runs the contest it should be whoever is interested/willing to archive and run the voting forms during the contest period.

Aside from the reasons this anon says. >>66806754 Cannibalism is just in a weird double whammy where it's hard to conceptualize a good plot for it in the context of chuuba fanfiction. Obviously there's the pure fetish angle but like, even the best of /meat/'s writing was just shock value "I'm eating my oshi/my oshi eats someone" with varying levels of 'supposed to titillate the reader'.
You can't really have a dialogue with a piece of meat. So whatever's interesting plot wise effectively comes from beside the cannibalism and not from the act itself.
Which basically locks down cannibalism fics to either fetish material or something where it's a side thing in a character piece examining their psychology as they go about it.
The /meat/ backlog is an example of the former, and I vaguely remember a micomet fic posted around valentine's day last year that's an example of the latter (though it's even more cannibalism adjacent since eit was about suicopath feeding zombie Miko with survivor flesh.)

I wrote half of an opening chapter a year ago which would feature Mel as one of the central characters (at least in the first act), but it's been sitting untouched since then so I wouldn't call it a WIP.
Still, I had intended on writing banpire sex at least once but now I doubt I'll find the motivation. Shit sucks.

>See the sticky
What a way to start the fucking morning. Since Mel got "terminated" and not "graduated" does that mean she's getting the Rushia treatment?

I will take back what I said if a helpful anon tells me "why" she's terminated and I only just woke up and have no time to read the sticky.

But you've got time to read and post on /wg/. Yeah, sure thing buddy. Go read the sticky.

Yep pretty much.
No one knows for sure, current medicated rrat is that it was a major NDA breach that was significant enough she had to get fired, but not big enough that they still let her have one last goodbye via tweet message. It was amicable enough that it was mutually agreed at least as per the japanese message from cover.

I was seriously considering going for that Mel /ss/ fic someday, but now I think writing it would just make me sad
I’m not the type of person to fall in love with a chuuba, but if I was, Mel would’ve been the one who took my heart

>What were your Mel wips
She's not a major character, but she's there. It's the Holoslavia story I'm working on at the moment.
>do you plan on finishing them?
Yup

I have like what, so many goddamn tabs opened up which makes my chromebook run really, really slow. Plus I hadn't refreshed the catalogue so it was slower to do that than what it is to make a reply here when I saw the news. I have the sticky open now and am going to do a good through read through it.

Poor Mel. Whatever dumb thing she did I truly hope she's okay.

Mel got to post a goodbye message and other holos seem genuinely sad about her fate, so that's different from Rushia. But formally, a termination is a termination. Mel's channel and all official references to her will be gone.

I had an idea for a simple smut story where Mel keeps breaking into your house in the middle of the night after you had a drunken one-night stand with her, which according to the rules means you invited a vampire into your home and now she can visit whenever she likes. The good news is that she's actually pretty nice, and usually just wants to have sex or cuddle because she's lonely.
>do you plan on finishing them?
I don't know. I've been too sad and stressed out to write much of anything for awhile. This whole mess just makes it worse.

Frankly? nothing. She has interacted with my oshi one or two times but thats it. I still liked her goofy self, so might try and sneak her into the background to honor her memory.
Helps that her termination wasnt laced by poison like Rushia's

I thought it was because she was "flirty" and you kept trying to stop her from feeding off you but you never could say no to her for some reason.

Well fuck. This is not what I wanted to see today. Christ, I'm really curious as to what went down, but above all just upset this has happened. It's a sobering reminder of how fragile the balance in this niche is. Best of luck to the sex vampire, her ASMRs were enjoyable and I regret never taking the chance to write her.

Thank you Koreabro, it means a lot for my stories to transcend the language barrier and be enjoyed by people across the world, especially if it was good enough to be read 5 times in a row. Godspeed with the translating.

I mostly made that email address because I needed a new burner account and happened to be hosting the contest. I intended to host more contests since I had it anyway, but it's not like just owning an email address gives me executive authority for being the organiser. Don't get me wrong, I'd be more than happy to, though if we're looking at the timeframe that >>66813590 suggested (June/July to September) that's around the time I'll be moving to Japan so I could be a little busy.
