Alright, I think I've fully figured out the solution to the glacier conundrum. Since there is no soil, the snow is the soil. Since the way a glacier works is by continuously having more snow added on top, compressing the snow beneath into ice, this means that stationary life in the snow is continuously migrating upwards. For example, the Ice Grass is growing at around the speed at which the snow accumulates, so that as snow piles up on top of it, the part of the grass that is now buried becomes the plant's roots. Similarly, the Cryoplankton is continuously migrating upwards through microchannels in the snow so that it stays exposed to sunlight.
The growth of the ice grass and the churning effect of the tenzal worm fulfill the role of breaking up the snow and ice into granules more suited to the growth of pseudo-vegetation, digging behaviours, and prevent the compaction of surface snow.

Yeah exactly, it's basically the unsung hero of the ecosystem, like white-rot fungus which helps turn dead wood in forests into useful soil. The higher concept is basically that this lets an environment that is normally as dead as naturally possible have a lot of life going on. The churning of the ice and snow and microveins probably helps distribute the nutrients more evenly, and also aerates the snow so that underground lifeforms can breathe.
I have some ideas for the underglacial tunnels too, since the increased activity should make those more common and they're really cool, I'm thinking they could parallel the catacombs deadbeat dig into the stone of the mountains, but instead of being the place you go when you die, it's the place you go to face death, since they're extremely dangerous, with the frequent cave ins, risks of flooding, slippery surfaces, potential predator life etc.

I hadn't even thought about that part. Would being able to burrow into the subterranean glacial caverns be more beneficial in terms of retaining heat? I imagine that it'd be kind of difficult for animal life to live in the tunnels as I'm picturing them but then again its a kind of difficult place to live in. My first thought was polar bear moles tho so make of that what you will

Oh, yeah that's a good point. Finding shelter on the glacier would be pretty difficult, and with the crazy blizzards that would be frequent, just being able to get out of the wind would be very valuable. That could be a good motivation for seeking those tunnels. Thanks for the idea!

Very common, I imagine. The snow-soil should make for a good building material, easy to cut but able to hold together with some work. This is probably useful for travelers in the very coldest parts of the mountains, at lower altitudes a simpler tent and the natural resistance to cold of Deadbeats is probably sufficient.

That's a good question. The autotrophs are so because unlike the other parts of the chain they don't get their energy from other components of the system, they get it from some external source (usually sunlight). But there are other things they need that they do get from elsewhere, basically their "building blocks". Stuff like amino acids, minerals, or in this instance magic stuffs.

I don’t know much about them either since I just copied from the worldbuilding site. It’s how the blob of mountains and plateaus along the American West Coast’s formed! Basically when an oceanic plate (the one to the north in this case) undergoes flat slab subduction it stretches the mountains into a wide volcanic front (as opposed to the Andes which is much narrower) with two distinct ridges (like the Cascades/Sierra Nevada and the Rockies) with a rugged plateau in between. From what I can tell it’s one of two ways that multiple mountain ranges can form to such great heights (the other one’s what made the Himalayas, which I assume is what’s going on in the east)
I don’t know what’s the implications yet beyond having more volcanoes but it probably determines what minerals I can mine!

>> No.68718640

>>68716622
Ohh I see, neat! Never really thought about it, but yeah it's interesting how some boundaries create those ripples of parallel mountain ranges, and others just raise this one blob all the way up. I instinctively thought the central mountain range was similar to the Himalayas due to the sheer size, but maybe I should look into the formation mechanism.

This is pretty much the case. There would be a lot of moisture in the air coming off of the big trees (remember that the central part of our forests "big trees" means an average of 120+ meters with some being even larger) in /uuu/, but given all of the magic concerned with the forests, if /vnug/ would prefer to not be too wet along our border, we can add some sort of magic canon reason for /uuu/ to keep that moisture from leaking over.

And to seal the oven after pre-heating it you need only a wooden panel door.

How you bake with the oven depends on your meal plan. The oven stays hot for hours after heating it. So first you preheat with firewood or charcoal. Then you bake your dishes that need the hottest temperature first. Which is usually your veggie casseroles, ship biscuits, or pizza. After that you bake your beef roasts and pies. Then you bake your breads or lower temperature dishes.

>It was a day like any other
>The sun was shining brightly over the Niji lands, scorching the dark back of farmers working the fields
>On its zenith, it stopped for but a moment
>A laugh reverberated throughout sky, one that seemed to shake the very land itself
>In a single moment, the bright sun lost its splendor and was extinguished
>in its place, only an infinitely black sphere remained

>Then, the flood came
>Spilling from the black abyss in the sky, and endless torrent of dark, oily water
>It rushed across the land, seemingly passing through everything as if it was but the harmless morning mists
>And yet, when it touched our skin, it burned
>When it entered our lungs, it suffocated
>When it entered our head, it whispered
>When it entered our hears, it erased

>We awoke on the same fields we were working but minutes earlier
>But, hours sure must have passed, for the sky was dark
>The land was dark
>We were dark
>Oh...

>And so, the flood stole our color
>And so, the flood stole our light
>And so, the flood stole our history
>It stole our gods
>It stole...our humanity

I'll get this into a proper short story in the coming days, I think some body horror on top of this could be nice

I really wanna say what the inspiration for the entire image was as well, but damn that would spoil what is in my opinion the rawest sentence in the story...
Fuck it, spoilers ahead,
"Tell me, investigator," the man said with a trembling voice, his eyes fixated on his fidgeting hands. The words unspoken seemed to resist his will, his very body convulsed as if their weight was choking the life from his throat. After several moments of pathetic struggles, his face shot upwards, his dark eyes locking with the man across the table. The black holes in his eyesockets were drawing the stoic imperial investigator in, as if to beckon him to plunge into their infinite depths.
"Tell me...h-have you ever....seen.... a God shaped hole?"

In the shadow of the sun's demise,
Where once we toiled 'neath azure skies,
A laugh, a shudder, a world undone,
As darkness claimed our radiant sun.

From that void, a flood did pour,
An endless tide, a Stygian roar.
Its touch, a searing, oily embrace,
That stole our hues, our very grace.

No warmth remained, no solace found,
In the suffocating depths, we drowned.
Whispers cruel, like venomous hiss,
Erased our minds, our souls amiss.

Lost in the void, where darkness reigns,
Our world devoured, by unseen chains.
No gods to heed, no light to guide,
In this abyss, where hope has died.

We are but shades, in a world of night,
No color, no joy, just endless blight.
The flood, a thief, of all we knew,
Leaving naught but despair in its cruel debut.

So let us mourn, our stolen fate,
In this bleak, desolate state.
For in the grip of eternal gloom,
We are but remnants, in this shadowed tomb.

I wonder what would hapen to the world's climate if all of NijiEN's land just sank into the sea. I know the oceans would be ravaged and there would be a global tsunami from the land sinking. I'd also think there would be tremendous pressure released from underground that would cause that continent chunk to sink.

The general area seems to be temperate forests and a bit of grasslands. Maybe that area is more mediterranean in climate? You still have cooler winters but it's warm mostly year round. Would be a great place for vineyards.

My idea is that a a black meteor that absorbs all light is hurling to NijiEN. We're watching god's wrath as wyrmwood plunges into the coast's hotspot. The impact causes the entire coastline to fracture and erupt; sinking the entire NijiEN land. What few lands that remain will depend on whether or not the gods of those lands will receive JP's blessing.

This is more of a prediction for if or when Anycolor terminates NijisanjiEN. All we can do is wait and see.

I just realize Baker-chan's airship is going to be falling apart by the end of the disaster. Maybe she can bring her ship to a shipyard and use their equipment to hold it together while she welds. Though at this point it might just be simpler to buy a wooden airship and retrofit the old ship's guts into the new ship.
