there are literally many examples of talent agencies and industries that do the same thing, yet they single out vtuber agencies and "idol culture". voice actors, music labels, pro wrestling, etc. they all, to some degree, follow the merch cut model (varying percentages) and company owns and manages the IP you create content with given what they produced with you as the talent.

nijisanji is just abominably dogshit in their execution of this known structure (2% merch cut, exclusivity clauses, shit management, etc.). hololive is one example that does it right (50% merch cut, no exclusivity clause, decent management that talents actually sing praises unforced, etc.).

The entire business model is different and nearly incomparable. Companies like Vshojo and other western streaming groups only hire people who are already big and established, they do absolutely nothing to actually build talent. Vshojo has never taken someone who streams to a dozen people and had them streaming to 12k a year later, you could say that they've nearly done the opposite with Nazuna and Kson. Companies like Hololive take in smaller streamers and completely change the course of their career. The trash taste guy said it disparagingly but he was right when he said that Hololive instantly exposes new talent to a massive audience. That's the trade off to not owning your character.

Nijisanji and Hololive were the only relevant players for the longest time and some small corpos are even worse. Nijisanji is worse than Hololive, but there is a reason why the whole things_cover_should_do.txt meme was a thing. I genuinely believe Cover means well most of the time, which is rare for a corpo, but they outgrew their operational capability during the vtuber boom and never really caught up with their actual size. So we have this bizzare situation where the corpo owns a multimillion dollar IP in which you play the key role but they won't give you a fucking computer to stream from for example. It's ridiculous sometimes and allows start ups like Vshojo or IdolEN to dunk on the vtuber corpo average by providing common sense things.
3DPD actors own their likeness even if they don't own the character, it's just not the same. The closest thing would be seiyuu, but even they are better off since they usually don't get years long contracts, and at the end of the day it is considered an extremely shitty career for everyone except the few top performers.
