>>69685057
Oh right, space wolves have a cold thing going on, should look into that. One thing is that if you just throw liquid nitrogen or dry ice on someone, it's actually relatively not too dangerous, because the substance will instantly evaporate with contact and form a gas cushion that protects whatever you threw it at.
So to weaponize cold properly we'd want some kind of cold napalm that can be extremely cold, sticky, and stays liquid as it warms up, this way it transfers the cold to the target properly.

Nap time bump.

>> No.69700031

Forget naptime. I'm too upset.

About the iceberg aircraft carrier the idea was abandoned because at the time it costed more time and money to carve out an iceberg big enough to be useable. It wound up being faster to build a carrier instead. There are challenges when making an iceberg ship. One of them is having the iceberg be the right shape to sail since we're still pre-industrial era. And ice is much heavier than wood. You could build a wooden frame then freeze the hull around it. Then you'd have to carve the hull into a useable ship shape to sail with. Cooking is surprisingly less hazardous in ice than on a wooden ship. The ice will absolutely echo from canonfire though. So you'll need ear protection. That said the hull will stand out in warm waters. As for the ship not melting it depends on how much magic you can invest in keeping them cold. If magic is abundant then you will spend less on freezing hulls than you would on wood. Which would be advantageous since wood is non-existent in glacier biomes.

>>69681310
Good question! I would say there are several things about salamoim physiology that affects what kinda military /vnug/ would have. I imagine when compared to humans, /vnug/ soldiers tend to have lighter equipment (somewhat less relevant in a post-armor age) since their semi-digitigrade legs mean they can carry less than humans. At the same time it also makes them quieter and more agile (perhaps also not very relevant since they still can’t dodge rifle bullets) so an archetypical /vnug/ soldier would be some kinda ambush-focused light infantry. As for their preferred environment them living underground definitely makes them more familiar with fighting there, but since they have infrared sensing like pit vipers I would say they’re generally good at fighting in the dark. Since a good chunk of /vnug/ is dense foggy forest I think they’ll also fight well there, which I guess isn’t that far from the Vietnam analogy
As for weapons I didn’t think too hard about it since I don’t think we ever decided on a general tech level but I imagine we’ll have some kinda guns! That said magic will no doubt play a big role in /vnug/ combat. I personally like how the fighting in my previous story turned out so something like that will probably be common place (even if it might be too fancy for large and serious combat)

Maybe if we're more flexible about deviating from it, it'd be fine? Something I realized with research late in the previous project is that a climate has a pretty large variance one way or another because of relatively short term factors like "current hydrology", ice age progression, biological factors, effects of volcanism.
So perhaps something like a global climate map ought to be a bit "blurrier", more like a general idea, and then an individual thread can define it further for their region if they'd like, including large deviations.
Some examples, the Harapan civilization collapsed overnight because all their hydrology fucked off, turning their land from a fertile one into a desert. The Sahara used to be green not so long ago. The inland sea there used to be in America made the West coast much wetter
One thing is that vnug and uuu lowlands will stay super foresty, hard not to be when they're on that side of the continent next to the hottest part of the ocean. But even if they weren't, I think everyone agrees that it's fine for stuff like Fauna magic or slime to be able to increase the forestation of the region.

It's just that I want to incorporate how Fauna plays her games (making Minecraft farms, caring more about efficiency), and having a subsection/different nation that emphasises these characteristics would be cool too, which is why I want it to be biopunk. Sea/island saplings being more technologically advanced due to interactions with other peoples would be a good compromise. Also coral/seaweed/coralline red algae saplings sound very cool.

No biopunk, sorry dude. Simple machines etc make sense, but engines and their ilk are out. Could certainly achieve similar things with biological "engines" (lungs or hearts for pumps, joint and muscles for leverage etc), but these things would have to be forcefully grown by Matres, and while technically possible, are inherently "unnatural" to the normal course of the growth of the forests. They would only be done if there was a great need.

Think of cold as the absence of energy, and you might find some new ways to do things.

I do not think cold magic works that well as a purely destructive element, but it does work very well as a nullifying or denying element.

Some thematic ideas easily associated with cold are Sharpness, Numbness, Preservation, Death, Refreshment, Peace, Sleep, Silence, Smothering, Hiding, Darkness, Purity, Wetness, Clarity, Stillness, and Decay. Any magic referencing these ideas or having to do with these concepts would be at least on a thematic if not mechanical level fitting for cold magic.

From a mechanical standpoint, if you want to look for destructiveness, you could consider utilizing the fact of how electrical conductivity works with the cold, and also the fact that it is ice crystals that generate the static electricity of lightning clouds (iirc). Cold and Electricity / Magnetism go hand in hand mechanically speaking.

Yeah, I should think more about "non-attack" spells, there's a lot to do there. I might be a bit influenced by games where the extent of cold magic is throwing ice chunks at bad guys.
Using the relation between ice crystals and static electricity is a fun thought, maybe that can be a path to some kind of local lightning storm ritual.

Of course, the holy grail of industry, the heat engine, ought to be trivial with cold magic.

Since the work done by a heat engine is equivalent to the difference between the heat absorbed from the hot reservoir and the heat discharged into the cold reservoir, at least on paper one could make a setup where the hot reservoir is room temperature and the cold reservoir is some very cold temperature. Sort of like a heat engine in reverse, but not in the same way that a refrigerator works.
Or would calling it a refrigerator in reverse be more accurate?

Yeah, one of my ideas for a larger weapon was a ballista driven by a piston which is basically going through the cycle you describe. It'd have big radiators-like things, but instead of trying to get rid of heat, it would be used to absorb heat from the atmosphere to dump it into the piston (I guess they'd be called heatsinks?) after the working fluid has been cooled to cryogenic temps by the cryomancy. Using that it can draw springs stronger than what would be feasible with manpower alone.
Also it'd look pretty cool, with each cycle blasting off a bunch of mist due to the heatsink suddenly getting supercooled.

ATTENTION: The group draw for /vt/ League 6 will be starting in half an hour! Be sure to come check it out to see who our 3 group stage opponents will be: https://isthisliv.com/vtleague
The format's a bit convoluted this time around, but instead of 4 teams to a group round-robin style, there are 6 teams in each group, split up into 2 subgroups. Everyone then plays the 3 teams in the other subgroup. The best 2 teams in each group are guaranteed to advance along with the best 2 third place teams overall.
Competition's fierce, so make sure to come cheer the team on! The league proper begins Friday March 1st at the same time as the draw, so keep a look out for links around that time.

Soup making is more than just throwing things in a pot and boiling it. Its about finding the right tastes in ingredients that you want in the broth and about which ingredients taste better when softened. Its also knowing which rocks change the acidity of your cooking dish. For example akaline based water made with lime rocks melts the wax in corn to make hominy, which is the superior corn.
