Like with LOTR, Frank made something cool and original. His ideas about how myths and grand figures entrap the minds of the people who buy into them (and make them easy targets for people who play on it), are still solid today. But like LOTR, large parts of it has been beaten to death with half-assed imitations. Also Frank was not good with technology, and that shows in his writings.
