Not rude to ask if you don't know, but just so you do know (if you don't) she did address this before. It always feels bad to lose things, but sometimes she personally does not want it to remain up, even unlisted, because of her own personal feelings about what kinds of streams she expects of herself and wants to make available. Sometimes she does leave streams just unlisted, but if they're deleted, they're deleted because she prefers that they be deleted.

Morning coffee, still working through my bag of ethiopian beans but switched to trying out the aeropress on them because the v60 was stalling due to all the fines. Did the Hoffmann recipe and it came out somewhat bitter. Gonna coarsen up the grind tomorrow and see if I get better results. Honestly these are the trickiest beans I have ever tried to brew. I knew ethiopian natural beans were difficult but damn.

I have a strange and contradictory relationship with roguelike games.
I dislike playing it safe and barely hanging on and just squeaking by to the finish line and instead I'll always do every high risk high reward method and option in early game to be better off in the long run. But I also really dislike repetitive grinding of the early parts of the failed runs that I sabotage off my own volition. And even when I have the lucky and greedy dream run going, (depending on the game) it starts to become too tedious to keep playing in a sharp and optimized manner and I just drop the game. Only to restart a new run some months later.

i'm having a somewhat similar experience with bg3's honor mode. i want to do everything to level up and maximize every advantage but then i fucking die and need to restart the whole thing. i'm also pretty reliant on savescumming so honor mode goes against my nature with it's single save.
always been more of an "ask for forgiveness rather than permission" kind of experimenter.

I'd assign repetitive grindiness more to MMORPGs in all honesty. Or any kind of RPG where you do essentially the same things all game only to have the number go up I find pretty disrespectful towards a player's time hello most retro jrpgs. Roguelikes at least can be short oneshots that don't demand any huge grind or investment but I suppose you could feel that a failed run is a "waste of time". Although I think in a way a roguelike format fixes the repetitiveness issue of RPGs when every new run is randomized and you have new potential builds to chart and to aim for. Up to a point, at least, when you grow too familiar with the game and know every marker by heart on how good of an RNG you've gotten and start grinding to get a high roll so to speak.

Doing something over because it's difficult and you failed is fine with me, it's really just the rogue paradigm of making failure not only mandatory, but making failure the majority of the game. It's not a skill issue with rogue, it's an RNG issue. You never get to feel like you the player have improved at all, it's just being a mindless automaton waiting for the RNG gods to grant you that 1 run out of 99 where you get the tools you need to succeed; and when it does you don't even get to feel good about it because you had nothing to do with that outcome.

i love being forced to strategize, but i only really feel it after i bang my head into the wall a few times first. it's a terrible habit in other circumstances as well but i'm more motivated by recovering from loss than continual gains.

i'm not sure exactly where cheese starts, but i'll probably try a solo run too eventually and i still need to do durge too. at first i wanted to do both honor and durge in the same run but that wasn't a great idea, can't properly roleplay with these stakes.

for me cheese is anything that trivializes the content, i think durge cape is cheese for example, killing somebody and immediately going into invisibility without using a spell slot passively is ultra cheese

the super broken builds that give you 700 damage per turn also are way too cheesy

I don't like poker and don't know a lot about it, but I'd say that poker has skill in the meta game, and not really in the game itself. Any skill in poker is played out in bluffing other human players or trying to predict other human player bluffs, but the actual game mechanics? Pretty much 90% RNG. I'd expect that poker players really don't get much joy out of playing poker against computer opponents, because it strips away all the meta game that makes it interesting and just leaves you with a card game that's heavily RNG based.

That's not saying RNG is bad, or that all card games are pure RNG. You need some RNG to mix things up, because if the game was 100% deterministic then it'd get boring very fast. It's just that rogue/likes/lites are all extremely tilted on the RNG side of things.

Meta game is a fair thing to bring up but I don't want to get too murked up in that as I was moreso trying to get at the probability calculation angle and whether that is a skill and whether that is an interesting challenge for a game to present to the player. Poker is simple enough that with any given information, you can do a calculation on what the optimal play at any given time is. RNG of course dictates that it's not going to end up that way, but you still made the correct play. But most people don't do that, they estimate. And those estimations can be prone to biases, playstyles or strategies which is how you end up at the meta game and reading other people, estimating their estimations, yada yada.

But anyways on the nature of RNG, IF you're presented with enough information, despite not being deterministic, you can do the math on what is the optimal decision in every little thing. It requires quite a lot out of the player both on the time they're willing to spend for any decision and also intimate knowledge on the mechanics. That's what I was kinda talking about how late game in some RNG fest gets tedious to keep playing sharp and optimal to the point of sucking the fun out. It's of course a bit much so we just estimate and strategize instead. Even so, l I think roguelikes with irreversible random outcomes has a lot going for it compared to savescumming to reroll the dice where instead of doing the math (or at least an estimation) on what's the good outcome, you force the hand of luck and effectively just choose instead.

except being a profitable poker player means it's 51-55 runs out of 100, but losing almost as often as you win is baked into the game and pretty stressful. the automaton part is true because while poker does take a lot of skill, most of it will become part of your "unconscious competence" or instinct. there is a mental checklist you need to go through with every hand, what position you are in, what hand you have, who are the opponents left to act after you, etc etc but this becomes second nature because these events happen so often (literally millions of times). deeper into the hand specific information about the player and stuff like timing tells becomes more relevant, the story you or your opponent is telling etc, and that involves more active thinking.
but yes the experience of "grinding poker" is 90% being a mindless automaton, but a well programmed one.

the rng factor serves mostly to mask the skill advantage and giving hope to bad players, without which poker wouldn't be profitable for anyone. even terrible players will win 30-40/100 times but inevitably lose in the long run. if you're a bad player you're better off playing slots which have like a 96% return rate (48/100), or better yet not gambling at all.

your second post (the one i replied to) is completely wrong though, at least when it comes to modern online poker. firstly there is plenty of intrinsic (tactical) skill in poker, things like pot odds, ranges, blockers, and other terms people won't understand and i can't be arsed to clarify. basically math and gameplay stuff that is indeed relevant even when playing against an AI. in the current meta it is far more relevant than playing the opponent, the two approaches are called "GTO" (game theory optimal) and "exploitative" (playing the player). GTO allows you to craft a mostly universal strategy that doesn't leave many weaknesses to be exploited, a kind of defensive strategy, while exploiting your opponent is preferable only when you have good information on them. GTO has been developed through "solvers" or having AI play against AI until they reach an equilibrium (neither side can make a more profitable decision). though this sounds dystopian, it is still hard for a real player to completely accurately apply GTO strategies and third-party programs that help with that in real-time are very much considered cheating and against the rules of every poker site. i used to worry AI will take over poker but it is ironically better protected than most other jobs because the whole point is good sportsmanship, and bots and third party programs aren't that hard to find out (playing too perfectly at low stakes? who are you and what are you doing playing for so little money if you're so good?).

there is a lot of extrinsic skill relevant to poker as well. things like having a good mindset, there is a lot of stress to deal with, good stamina to play as many hours as possible, etc.

Indresding. I was under the impression that the math on poker outcomes was solved decades ago without the need for AI bruteforce.
Seems to be in a similar state to online chess where there are AI models with the "state of the art" knowledge on moves that are not expected for human players to consistently perform at and is de facto considered cheating.

technically poker isn't "solved". i don't think chess is either since new moves and strats keep popping up, but chess is more solveable because it is a "perfect information game" rather than poker which is "limited information game" (you don't see your opponent's cards and you don't know what community cards will appear, while you can see everything on the chess board). the math for stuff like odds was solved long ago but that just scratches the surface of all the math. a limited scenario like drawing for a flush is one thing and entirely another to consider how a whole range of hands interacts with all possible community cards versus the opponent's range.
that's another thing, poker has moved away from trying to read your opponent's specific hand but instead the range of hands. it's more complicated but more objective.

also also another reason no limit holdem is harder to solve is having so many different betsize options. that's usually the preset required, like you pick several bet sizes and then the AI tells you when and where to use them. personally the most cognitively draining part for me is deciding how much to bet, which leads to another point: simplifying your strategy rather than trying to follow GTO perfectly is worthwhile because it increases how long you are able to play before getting tired, so it's a trade off.

Chess just has a lot of possible permutations of possible states making it computationally taxing so people and machines conceded to operate off of heuristics, estimations. I see it more as a philosophical topic rather than one that can be put down into a strategy guide: is it solved if it's out of reach?
