Some animals should never be kept as pets, regardless of how tame they are. Big cats, wolves, bears, foxes, and such aren't adapted to living indoors, they have to be outside and they have to have a lot of space to roam around otherwise they suffer mentally. To be honest I think most domestic dogs and cats are also not suited to indoor life. It breaks my heart when I visit zoos and see animals like rhinos and elephants pacing back and forth in a little enclosure, or seeing seals and sea lions do the same in tiny aquariums. The exceptions would be extremely domesticated breeds that cannot survive on their own outside, like mini lop rabbits, pug dogs, and sphynx (hairless) cats; or animals with such primitive brains that they don't suffer mentally from captivity, like lizards and fish.

Humans suffer mentally when kept in captivity too. We're supposed to spend time out in nature and not in self-made prison cells.
