Well, when you first start out there's a bunch of stuff that tries pulling your attention but off the top of my head, theres couple of questlines like dealing with the scorched and investigating the remains of those that lost to them. The settlers and raiders questlines that have you break into the vault that contains gold reserves. Some bos steel stuff. You can go to Pittsburg or Atlantic city. You can join the enclave/modus. Theres a bunch of cool cryptids you can fight that are actually really well done surprisingly. Some cool public events happen all the time like this alien one thats going on right now, Theres a nuka cola carnival in town where you can play some games. You can make some pretty nice houses and bases with companions including a assaultron who you can romance

Idk about mods but if you’re going for a more vanilla experience it’s very easy to fuck up your character when you level up skills. If your a min max freak then you actually want the skills you use more often to be untagged skills while the ones you don’t use be your tagged ones. Leveling up tagged skills increases the bar that gives you an actual level up which then lets you put points in certain attributes like strength or endurance. Leveling up certain skills enough actually gives you extra points to put into these attributes upon level up so if I use swords a bunch and it goes from 15 to 17 swordsman I can put 3 points into strength on level up, now with all I’ve described you can see the problem with the level up system since if you level up the wrong skills or neglect others your character will be missing a lot of free attribute points that the game excepts you to have as you level up and you can snowball into having a tougher time with enemies in combat since you do barely any damage and have no health
