I sat down to watch Aqua’s first twitcast but the entire thing is in Japanese with no subs or in chat translations. I looked online to see if anyone had translated it but I gave up and watched Kiara play Minecraft instead. Anyone can relate?

If your only goal is to learn enough japanese to enjoy vtubers then start now and don't stop. You can become proficient enough in understanding to enjoy streams to a great degree in a couple months if you stay consistent with it. Sure if you actually want to truly learn the language and speak it then that will take a lot longer, but you can enjoy streams greatly with just some basic reps. Its really not that hard.

Me too. I subbed to them because they're in Hololive but I don't watch streams. I tried once but I could only react to the cute noises.
It's better to wait for the clips anyway.

Learn katakana and hiragana and piece together what she says then use deepl or googletl. Do it enough times and you'll become a no name translator hated by the community for bad rrat, but at least you'll know what she's saying.

i'm totally fine with being an EOP. I don't understand the shaming that goes on towards EOP's like me at all. like.... why is that something I should feel bad about exactly? japanese isn't a super important language.

the great thing about hololive is that there's a huge wealth of clippers and translators who translate good moments from the streams, so literally why should i give a shit about not knowing japanese?

>NOOOOO you can't watch clippers!
>NOOOOO you have to feel bad about not knowing japanese!!!
lol too bad. suck my dick.

Where should I start anon? I really want to understand Aqua better. I have resources like books and online guides and stuff on my phone but digging through it all to find what works and what doesn’t sounds hard. I also live with people and I’d rather not have them hear me practicing Japanese

>> No.7761510

You know you don't have to learn a whole new language to enjoy foreign media?
How many people (in the west) who watch anime even now how to speak Japanese? On the flipside, Japanese people also watch English language media (Marvel movies to name something very mainstream) without knowing English.
Subbed clips already exist to fulfill the demand of EOPs who want to understand what happens during stream highlights.
It doesn't make you a less of a fan if you only watch clips. There are some JP Holos whose actual stream I've never watched and I've only watch clips of.
Gatekeeping fans just because they don't understand the language is stupid anyway. The lack of gatekeeping is why Hololive succeeded in the west.
So be proud that you're an EOP. We contributed to Cover's success.

I do my dekinai reps. I imagine another year or so and I'll be at the minimum proficiency I want to be. I just need to read more. If I put more than the minimum effort into it I could probably be decent enough even now, since it's been almost a year and a half since I started.
The only thing I regret is not putting in the effort when I was 16 and actually started wanting to learn nip. I'd be so fucking good by now if I had.

I don't really watch zatsudans or games that involve a lot of reading / talking. When I do however its usually someone with a nice voice and its just background noise while I do other things.
Most video games, especially if you've played them before are really easy to just follow a long with and you don't necessarily need to understand what they're saying to get a jist of what's going on. Reactions are reactions and again you don't really need to understand what they're saying. And as for music / singing streams both are universal and I personally don't need to understand the lyrics (in the case of singing) to enjoy it.

>> No.7763346

This stream is prime Gura. She is just talking and talking and talking. Its amazing how good of a talker she is and what a fantastic story teller she is. No wonder her viewership is so high right now.

Nonsense, don't listen to this Anon. If you become fluent in a language your brain has officially obtained it. I lived in Germany for 6 years and got gud in it. Then I moved away and didn't use it for 4 years and thought I forgot it all. Turns out a week of going back to Germany was all I needed to activate it again. The only thing you'll probably forget regarding Japanese are the Kanji - because written language isn't the same thing as the actual spoken language (which your brain is literally designed to absorb).

Before Hololive I watched a couple streamers occasionally. They were American and would begin around midnight for me. So I was stuck with old school TV.

I want to watch people play games. I also kind of liked anime as a teenager. I really like girls but whenever I seen them streaming they weren't the type I'd want to do anything with except fuck. I can't physically imagine myself fucking a 2d person so I lust after their personalities. It makes me feel like a good person.

A decade ago I realized I have enough time in my schedule to fit in some language classes. As I consumed a lot of Japanese media already back then, that was naturally my first choice, but for whatever reason it was a really popular choice for everyone, apparently not even because of anime, but because people in my college thought taking classes in non-Indo-European languages makes you cool and cultured somehow. And so I learned there were people literally camping outside the building where the sign-up sheets were posted, because that's another experience college kids like to brag about. I rolled in at noon, saw that not only Japanese but also French and Chinese were already full and picked Italian instead.

As I ended up never using Italian for anything other than lazy attempts to decipher comics on Sadpanda, I have forgotten pretty much everything to the point where I struggle to recall even personal pronouns. On the other hand I've picked up enough Japanese along the way, all the while never properly studying it, that I could get irrationally angry at the EOPs in the chat for not understanding what a chuuba is saying even if I completely missed every single good joke.

So the moral of the story is that you should pay attention to what's going to actually be useful for (you) and start doing your reps right now because by being here in this thread you are already showing a higher than average interest in Japanese. And like many other people have said, most chuubas use fairly simple Japanese and you'd be surprised at how much and how quickly you begin to understand as long as you put a little bit of effort even if it's going to be years before you can actually read Soseki in the original.
