Americans has to pay for their own health insurance. Your job usually gives you an option for a family plan that covers the whole family, including spouses and children.
However, after you hit 25, you can no longer be considered a 'child' in a family plan and you'll have to start paying for your own insurance. If you don't have insurance, then you have to pay everything out of pocket.
From what it sounds like, Ame's health insurance covers some of her visit to the doctor's office. Despite working for an insurance and pharmaceutical company, I have to first meet the deductible amount before the insurance covers my doctors visit. America is still a land of meritocracy and opportunity, it's just that most poor people don't know how to make it. Some don't want to make it, while others are trapped in wage slaving.
