Pay out company gives to investors holding their stock. It's an easy way to keep investors happy and keep the stock stable while incentivizing people to buy your stock.

Real world example. T pays out a .50/share dividend. You own 100 shares of T when T declares their dividend. T gives you $50 because you own their stock.

This is neat but the real benefit is compounding interest. Instead of taking the dividend you reinvest it. Say T is at $25(seriously if it was fucking buy it that is a steal). You use your dividends to buy more T. Taking your total shares to 102. So next time divies come around you receive $51 after 4 more pay out your shares are now 110 and you recieve $60(this is an extremely basic and inaccurate explanation but I hope you get the idea.) So every time a dividend comes out the company is buying you more shares of their stock essentially for free which in turn increases your dividend pay out.
